Packet(TM) today announced that Pac-West, a provider of traditional and next-generation voice communications services has deployed Acme Packet's Net-Net(R) session border controllers A Session Border Controller is a device used in some VoIP networks to exert control over the signaling and usually also the media streams involved in setting up, conducting, and tearing down calls.  to deliver voice-over-IP (VoIP) interconnect services. Pac-West's VoiceSource(SM) suite of services include IP connectivity for origination and termination of voice traffic and is currently offered in 6 Western states. Pac-West has announced a planned expansion to 36 major metropolitan markets, covering more than 50% of the U.S. population beginning in 2006.

In delivering this service, Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers (SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002. ) are deployed in two of Pac-West's SuperPOPs and serve as the secure bridge between the IP and TDM networks A network that transmits data in dedicated end-to-end circuits comprising 64 Kbps digital channels. Respondents reported that terminating voice traffic was an average of 7% native VoIP in 2005, jumping to an average of 20% in 2006.

"As voice traffic transitions to IP, our customers need a secure and flexible way to connect to the PSTN," said Michael Hawn, Vice President, Customer Network Services at Pac-West Telecomm.
