PWRDF (The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund) 1999 Annual Report.

See and Hear the Call

GOD IS always `doing a new thing' (Isaiah 43.19). God is always calling us into the future. To see the new thing and to hear the voice that beckons, we need to know our history. A colleague of mine has said it well: "Since we live our lives forwards and understand them backwards, it helps us to make our journey if we have maps of the past to guide us." Last year, we celebrated 40 years of PWRDF PWRDF Primate's World Relief and Development Fund . As we move on, I think of that forty-year story as a map enabling us to discern the path ahead.

First known as The Primate's World Relief Fund, its original mandate was support relief efforts for disasters in beyond our country. Later, another marker was reached when the word "Development" was added. Not just relief efforts, but encouragement of local communities in their search for right relation and well-being became central to the vision of the Primate's Fund.

A further landmark was reached when the federal and some provincial governments began to match funds. A recent milestone has been a concern to take seriously the Canadian International Development Agency's 1994 urging to see the Fund incorporated. It is hard for me to imagine how families can cope with such dreadful memories!

The personal story of Linda, the school's vice-principal, is one of horror overcome. She was nine years old when her father and grandfather were killed, and she and her mother and nine siblings siblings npl (formal) → frères et sœurs mpl (de mêmes parents)  escaped to Honduras. After 12 years in refugee camps she returned home. She works at a school for 1100 students, kindergarten kindergarten [Ger.,=garden of children], system of preschool education. Hand in Hand in Burundi

In northeast Burundi I grabbed at Bishop John's invitation to accompany him to one of the farthest points in the Diocese of Gitega for a Service of Confirmation. Along with the bishop and his driver there was a young man going back to his work at one of the towns along our way.

We all loaded into the car--the bishop with his vestments, me with a camera and the third rider who placed a rather large box of freshly printed pamphlets into the trunk. I was struck by the title of the brochure that indicated it was the newsletter of ITEKA. I remembered the PWRDF committee meeting where we approved the grant for translation of this newsletter into Kirundi. And here it was, a publication that informed the most vulnerable people of the political conditions in the country and how they had a part in bringing lasting peace.

I am impressed and encouraged how, through our networks at home and abroad, PWRDF can take the hand of the donor in Canada and place it in the hand of a partner in Burundi, with the common cause being peace.

When you consider JRM's ministry in welcoming refugees and enabling and empowering them to better meet some of the challenges they face, the challenge to our local churches is to continue supporting the work of PWRDE We need to ensure they are financially able to continue their commitment to JRM and the projects being carried out in refugee camps throughout the world.

Living Partnership in the Philippines

On the island of Cebu, Edmund Laldin and I followed Tata -- the petite, energetic Executive Director of PWRDF partner FARDEC -- through a well-used soccer field and up a dry hill to meet with members of the Saragosa Farmers' Organization. We learned how these farmers, by organizing, had won from their absentee landlord Absentee landlord is an economic term for a person who owns and rents out a profit-earning property, but does not live within the property's local economic region. Joining them were several women and young children who had come from the neighbouring barangay to learn how to organize. Taxes consumed over half the profits on their produce and all profits from their coconut harvest. Throughout the presentation on Agrarian Land Reform, the Vice-Chair translated into the neighbours' dialect dialect, variety of a language used by a group of speakers within a particular speech community. Every individual speaks a variety of his language, termed an idiolect.  as they listened attentively, and eagerly posed their questions.

Of all the activities in which the PWRDF networks have recently been involved, the Jubilee program has been the most inspiring. Jubilee has provided us with the opportunity to work within our Anglican Church, as well as ecumenically, on a program grounded in the scriptural scrip·tur·al

message that has been the basis of PWRDF's work-the call to justice for all.

At the Jubilee! Releasing the Vision conference in Peterborough, Ont., Anglicans from across the country, in all areas of our church work, came together. Some who attended had been involved for years in work inspired by the Jubilee vision. Others were new to the program, and some were not sure what to expect. Towards the end of the conference, someone who identified me as a member of the Joint Working Group that helped in planning told me how much he was getting out of the conference. He felt inspired and motivated to go back home and do something. It was great to see people come together around the vision, become enthusiastic about the possibilities, and depart committed to releasing the vision in their home parishes and dioceses.

GENEROSITY IN A WORLD OF ENOUGH

Jubilee reminds us that God's generosity provides enough for all. For most of us, the challenge is to learn what is "enough" then move towards living there as Jubilee people. PWRDF is a way for Canadian Anglicans to reflect and act on the issues of "enough" that challenge us globally.

* Over 70% of PWRDF's receipts, including donations and bequests, come from concerned individuals and parishes.

* This year 639 churches invited 95,968 envelope givers to make PWRDF part of their parish outreach through the Offering Envelope Program.

A message from the Director

Dear Friends,

IN MY first year as Director of PWRDF, I want to extend a special thanks to each and everyone of you for your generosity to PWRDF and commitment to the international ministry of the Anglican Church of Canada. Once you have read through the information in our annual report, I am sure that you will share our pride in the accomplishments of the PWRDF staff, our counterpart organizations in Canada and around the world, and the networks of faithful Anglicans who support our work in parishes across Canada Across Canada was an afternoon program that formerly aired on The Weather Network. The segment ran from early 1999 until mid 2002. The show ran from 3:00PM ET until 7:00 PM ET. .
