PWC event gives architects a chance to tell their stories.


The Professional Women in Construction regular "Meet the Architects" event, which took place on Aug. 23rd at La Maganette Ristorante, gave attendees an opportunity to learn about some of the city's architecture firms The following is a list of notable architecture firms, past and present.

Francesca Bucci, AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture  associate and the principal of BG Studio International, spoke of a recently completed project for AvalonBay Communities, a mixed-use property on the Bowery and work with developers that will contribute to the revitalization of lower Manhattan. Bucci told the audience that she hopes to see an "intense facelift" for the subway system that might take the form of the proposed Second Avenue tunnel; the completion of the High Line on the West Side; and a new landmark bridge connecting Manhattan and New Jersey.

Carlos Cardoso, associate partner with Beyer Blinder Belle Architects, noted his firm's landmark restoration projects, including Grand Central Station and Ellis Island. Cardoso insisted on the importance of increasing design/build work in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Jan L. Bishop, a principal of HOK NY Health Care, spoke of HOK's recent award for the "Hospital of the Future" and an honor from an international design competition for BMW's world headquarters. HOK has been chosen to design the Harlem Hospital replacement project, as well as the new $350 million replacement hospital in Princeton, N.J. Pointing out that HOK has recently finished the first of its kind LEED-certified St. George Terminal for the Staten Island Ferry The Staten Island Ferry is a passenger ferry operated by the New York City Department of Transportation between Whitehall Street at the southernmost tip of Manhattan near Battery Park (South Ferry) and St. , Bishop stressed the need for sustainable design in all new construction.

Erica Lindenbaum Tishman, a partner with DeWitt Tishman Architects, predicted a "major growth in the residential market in perimeter metropolitan areas" over the next five years, including the outer boroughs and New Jersey towns accessible by public transportation.

Frank V. Pampalone, director of design and construction with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., noted that the retail giant aims for a 6 to 8% increase in square footage each year and expects to complete 340 to 350 projects by the end of 2005.
