PUTTING ON THE HITS ANDERSON'S HOMER, KEY THROW LIFT ANGELS ANGELS 7, MINNESOTA 6.

Byline: Joe Haakenson Staff Writer

ANAHEIM - As they got ready for Wednesday's game, a number of Angels watched a video montage of their at-bats against Minnesota Twins The Minnesota Twins are a professional baseball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twins are a member of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Twins have played in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.  pitcher Johan Santana Johan Alexander Santana Araque (born March 13, 1979) is a Major League Baseball left-handed starting pitcher who plays for the Minnesota Twins. The tape needs to be updated after Garret Anderson Garret Joseph Anderson (born June 30, 1972 in Los Angeles, California) is a Major League Baseball left fielder who has played his entire career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.  hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning that lifted the Angels to a 7-6 victory in front of 41,534 at Angel Stadium.

``The more and more you face a guy during the game, I don't want to say it teeters in your favor, but you get familiar with him,'' said Anderson, who began the day hitting .188 (3 for 16) against Santana. ``A lot of times you don't get the chance to face a guy three or four times. It does help.''

Anderson, who will play in Tuesday's All-Star Game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games  in Detroit, also had the defensive play of Wednesday's game, throwing out Michael Ryan There are many notable people with the name Michael Ryan:

needed only five pitches for a 1-2-3 ninth inning and his 17th save. He got help, as both shortstop Maicer Izturis and Kennedy at second base made outstanding plays on groundballs to keep the Twins off base.

The Angels took two of three from the Twins, and now have won or split six consecutive series. They haven't lost a series since Washington took two of three June 13-15.

The victory also was the Angels' second against Santana this season. They defeated him May 1, 2-1, ending his personal 17-game winning streak. On Wednesday they rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 5-3.

``When I think of this team, I think of the word `character,' '' Angels starting pitcher Paul Byrd. ``You don't want to get ahead of yourself and think playoffs, but you look at the (opposing) pitcher on the mound and it doesn't matter. This team finds a way to get it done.''

Byrd, who said he pitched well, gave up five runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Twins knocked him out of the game in the top of the seventh and took a 5-3 into the bottom of the inning Noun 1. bottom of the inning - the second half of an inning; while the home team is at bat

Chone Figgins led off with a single and one out later Vladimir Guerrero singled. Santana fell behind in the count to Anderson, 2-0, then grooved a 91 mph fastball that Anderson hit into the right-field bleachers for a 6-5 lead.

As big as Anderson's homer was, the Angels needed his defense in the top of the eighth. The Angels increased their lead to 7-5 on Juan Rivera's solo homer in the seventh, but the Twins already hadscored once in the eighth when Punto came to the plate with one out and Ryan on third, representing the tying run.

``I got a good throw off; I had a chance to set up behind the ball,'' Anderson said. ``I don't have the arm strength of some guys, like Ichiro (Suzuki), but I have a good arm. I can make some throws.''

Jose Molina, getting a start in place of his older brother Bengie, made a good play on the receiving end to catch the ball and tag out Ryan.

``We practice that every day in spring training,'' Jose Molina said. ``We get good throws, bad throws, every kind of throw. You try to get it on a good hop. The ball was a little up the line, so I concentrated on getting the ball in my glove. If you don't catch the ball first, you've got no play.''
