Fashion on their minds

Many girls went to great lengths to ensure their dresses were one-of-a-kind. One girl returned a dress twice, then arrived to find another girl at the prom with her same canary-colored gown.

Some chose gowns that bared their midriff midriff /mid·riff/ (-rif) the diaphragm; the region between the breast and waistline.

Parents clicked away with digital cameras at one pre-prom gathering, then later a row of security guards searched purses for alcohol, cigarettes, drugs -- and gum.
