``Purim is a chance to be a little bit crazy. We wear costumes and masks. We do funny things. The skits tend to be clever,'' said temple member David Kleinbart, who works at KCRW-FM (89.9). ``It's a rare Jewish holiday

that is not solemn. We hope people will be delighted and have fun.''

Purim, which will begin at sundown Thursday, recalls the events told in the scroll of Esther. Esther, a queen who hides her identity as a Jew, foils a plot to kill all Jews in an ancient kingdom of Shushan.

The Purim schpiel, as the parody of the story is known, often has a theme. Performers and attendees dress in costume to fit the theme, dress up as one of the main characters in the story or at least wear a mask.

It closely follows a family that is unwilling to leave its village home as the water levels of the Narmada River, mostly because the government provides them no viable  by boos and the grating sound from ``graggers,'' the traditional Purim noisemaker.

``Purim is a joyous holiday. It's wacky and noisy. There is active participation by everyone,'' said Cantor Sharone Rosen of Temple Beth Torah.

Rosen, who co-wrote the schpiel with Kleinbart, has previously dressed up in a Kabuki costume, as a bearded wizard, all in green for the ``Irish Purim Party'' and as a hippie for the Beatles-inspired schpiel last year.

``Yes, there is a serious side to Purim. In the story, Mordecai is told to bow down Verb 1. bow down - get into a prostrate position, as in submission

``Sometimes you have to be true to your ideals and be extra brave to keep your ideals intact, as Mordecai and Esther did.''

The sole religious obligation for Jews on Purim is to hear Esther's story. It is a tradition to eat hamantaschen, a triangle-shape cookie filled with fruit or poppy seeds. Rosen said there is a custom of drinking until ``you can't tell the difference between the names of Mordecai and Haman Mordecai and Haman

``The basic messages are that there are at times people who wish to harm the Jewish people and that our salvation is in our hands,`` said Rabbi Michael Mayersohn, a visiting rabbi at Temple Beth Torah who will co-lead the schpiel. ``We also learn that safety comes from a strong and open Jewish identity Jewish identity is the subjective state of perceiving oneself as as a Jew and as relating to being Jewish. Jewish identity, by this definition, does not depend on whether or not a person is regarded as a Jew by others, or by an external set of religious, or legal, or sociological . We should be proud of our identity as Jews. The messages of Purim are especially important when we live in times of threats and dangers. The frivolity Frivolity
