PUNA GEOTHERMAL VENTURE CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL KS-8 FLOW TEST

PUNA GEOTHERMAL VENTURE CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL KS-8 FLOW TEST
PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- OESI Power Corp. (NASDAQ: OESI) announced today that the flow test of the KS-8 well drilled by Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) in Puna, Hawaii has been successfully completed.
The flow test examined the geothermal resource characteristics and the integral operation of the geothermal field and the power plant.
 The following results were observed:
 1. The geothermal resource exceeded OESI's predictions of 5-7 MWe well. Although the well was completed with a casing of less than 5 inches as opposed to a normal diameter of 9 5/8 inches, the well delivered approximately 300,000 lb/hr of geothermal fluid at a 90 percent steam fraction and a temperature of 585 degrees F. The company estimated that this amount of steam can support the generation of approximately 15-16 MWe. Moreover, no drawdown, which would indicate potential future depletion of the geothermal resource, was observed during the flow test. Both the fluid and gas injection systems operated satisfactorily.
 2. Based upon the flow test, the geothermal fluids contained approximately 0.1 percent of H2S and 0.1 percent other noncondensable gases, principally CO2. The total dissolved solids measured less than 1,000 ppm, while the pH was greater than 5.
 3. The power plant operated during the flow test and generated at peak output a net 7.5 MWe that was delivered to Hawaii Electric Light Co. (HELCO). The power plant, however, suffered minor leaks and vented small quantities of steam H2S and other noncondensable gases.
The power plant and the KS-8 well are currently shut down to allow for the permanent connection of the KS-8 well to the steam gathering system. Several pipes, seals and valves will be repaired and if necessary, replaced. Once the KS-8 well has been interconnected, the necessary repairs have been made to the plant and an operating permit is received from the Hawaii State Department of Health, OESI estimates that the KS-8 well and power plant could return to service by late September, continuously delivering up to 15 MWe to HELCO.
OESI Power Corp. acquires, operates and sells interests in geothermal power plants in the western United States, Alaska and Hawaii.
