PUMPING UP HELP; GAS STATION SHARES PROFITS WITH ARMENIANS.

A Glendale gas station owner has come up with his own way this year to commemorate Armenian genocide Editing of this page by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled due to vandalism. .

He is donating 10 percent of his profits this month to the Armenia Fund, which provides aid in Armenia and its Karabagh region for victims of the 1988 earthquake.

``We all have to do our part to keep our sad history from being buried in the background, and the way I have chosen to do it is by helping to build a stronger Armenia and Karabagh,'' Mark Tavoukjian, who owns the Mark's 76 station at Glendale and Wilson Avenues, said Tuesday. ``This money will be donated to building highways and schools and churches.''

Armenians say Turkish soldiers killed 1.5 million Armenians from 1915 to 1923. Armenian-Americans in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  annually commemorate what they call the genocide of those years, and they demonstrate at the Turkish consulate to protest the Turkish government's refusal to acknowledge that the genocide happened.

Sally Iskenderain, the Armenia Fund's executive director, said the money will be used to help build a north-south highway North-South Highway may refer to road:
  • North-South Highway (Armenia) in Armenia
  • North-South Expressway in Malaysia
  • North-South Highway (Prague) in Prague, Czech Republic
 in the Karabagh region of Armenia.

Events being held this week include:

A blood drive at the Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  Armenian Community Center, 2633 Honolulu Ave., 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

A recital at the Crescenta Valley Armenian Community Center, 2633 Honolulu Ave., 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial service at the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Glendale Adventist Medical Center is located in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, California. It was founded in 1905. Glendale Adventist Medical Center is a sister institution of Loma Linda University Medical Center and is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist hospital system.  chapel at 1509 Wilson Ave., noon Thursday.

A protest at the Turkish consulate, 4801 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . 9 a.m. Friday.

A candlelight vigil at St. Gregory Armenian Catholic Church The Armenian Catholic Church is an Eastern Catholic church sui juris within the Catholic Church. Historically it represents a schism from the Armenian Apostolic Church. , 1510 E. Mountain Ave., 7:30 p.m. Friday.

A closing program at the Crescenta Valley Armenian Community Center, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday.

Commemoration of the Armenian martyrs at St. Peter Armenian Church, 17231 Sherman Way, Van Nuys, 10 a.m. Saturday.

A solemn requiem service will be held in Montebello at the Armenian Martyrs Monument at Bicknell Park, 850 Via San Clemente Ave., 2 p.m. Saturday.
