I go out walking for a few hours a few days a week,'' says Regenstreif, who was diagnosed more than three years ago with leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the soft muscle tissue. ``I will probably start training seriously after the first of the year. Run, walk, crawl - whatever it takes for me to do it and finish it, that's what I'm gonna do.'' Regenstreif, 47, says she wasn't aware of The Wellness Community until she was diagnosed with cancer. The organization helped her with her emotional recovery during a relapse two years after her initial diagnosis. ``(I attended) support groups and went there for conga drumming and made a lot of friends there. I love it. It's just a very supportive atmosphere of wonderful people.'' For last year's marathon, she raised about $3,500 through sponsorships. This year, her goal is to double that amount. Rahbar and his wife, Zita, volunteer at The Wellness Community. Last year, the 60-year-old Westlake Village man raised more than $5,700 for the organization through his participation in the marathon. ``(The Wellness Community) helps the cancer patients, survivors and families to cope with the disease and helps them have a better quality of life while they fight the disease,'' says Rahbar, who began volunteering at the center after his wife's brother died of cancer. ``I think that's a very worthy cause - almost all of us have been affected by the disease.'' Strides of Hope will begin training later this month for the Adidas Vancouver Marathon.
