PULSE ON THE SHELF.RUNNING AND RUNNING ... : Jeff Galloway, one of the foremost long-distance runners and teachers, has written a book to help those trying to run the ultimate race. ``Marathon: You Can Do It!'' (Shelter; $14.95) aims to help runners of all levels finish a 26.2-mile race. One technique that makes Galloway's training program accessible is taking ``walk breaks.'' Galloway writes: ``Our bodies weren't designed to run continuously for long distances, especially distances as long as the marathon.'' He encourages people to alternate between walking and running and says they will see their endurance improve. The book also includes fat-burning techniques, information on choosing the right shoes and clothing, a pacing chart and a listing of major marathons and running resources.
