PULSE A NEW SPIN ON FASHION.

Byline: Barbara De Witt

You probably don't think much about a wheelchair wardrobe, unless you've needed one.

Simi Valley resident Jeffrey Warren Hayne joined the wheelchair world, which includes two million Americans, about a year ago when an auto accident left him a paraplegic paraplegic /para·ple·gic/ (-ple´jik)

2. an individual with paraplegia.
. Since then he's learned that regular pants bunch uncomfortably in the back, tend to look short while you're sitting, and usually have belt loops that aren't strong enough to be used to pull one's pants on.

As a contestant in the world's first modeling contest for wheelchair users, 22-year-old Hayne may get to do something about it.

If he wins the New Mobility magazine-sponsored contest he'll get a modeling contract and free clothing from Rolli-Moden Designs, but Hayne hopes the contest also will allow him to raise awareness through public exposure.

``On one hand, I'd like people to see we're no different - just faster downhill ... yet I'd also hope that big companies such as Levi's would address the fashion issue of special needs. We want the same clothes we used to wear. We just need a few changes,'' he explains.

Hayne already does his part to promote wheelchair-bound by auditioning for numerous acting roles - and he's proud to be the first actor to perform in a wheelchair at his alma mater, South Dakota State University South Dakota State University, at Brookings; land-grant support; coeducational; chartered 1883 as Dakota Agricultural College, opened 1884. In 1907 it became South Dakota State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, and in 1964 its present name was adopted. .

A product development manager for Brentwood Communications in Newbury Park, Hayne is currently self-training for the upcoming Paralympics triathlon trials that include swimming, hand cycling and racing chair categories.

To enter the New Mobility/Rolli-Moden Modeling Contest, write to P.O. Box 1767, Santa Monica, CA 90406. You must be 18 or older, and must include four quality color prints in different poses and a biographical sketch of 100 to 200 words. Deadline is Dec. 31.
