PUDDINGSTONE IS SECOND LAKE IN SAN GABRIEL GOING AFLOAT; FLOAT TUBERS WELCOMED TO FISH WITH BOATERS.

Byline: Keith Lair

In the fall, Crowley Lake Crowley Lake is a reservoir on the upper Owens River in southern Mono County, California in the United States. It was created in 1941 by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP) as storage for the Los Angeles Aqueduct and for flood control.  in the Eastern Sierra can get hundreds of float-tube anglers.

On Saturday, Frank G. Bonelli Regional County Park officials hope to get a tenth of that when Puddingstone pud·ding·stone

Lake holds its first float-tube derby.

``I'm really surprised by the response we've received,'' said Jolene LaMont, who organized the tournament with help from the Department of Fish and Game's Fishing in the City program. ``It's been great. We've received about 125 phone calls. I was thinking I'd be happy if we got 20 people.''

Float tubes are popular at Crowley with fly anglers. Those not wanting to rent a boat, or fish from the shore banks, can grab their inner tube, put on waders and fins, and kick out to their favorite fishing spot.

LaMont says she hopes the same situation will happen at Puddingstone, the second San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. ``We've been talking about it for a while,'' LaMont said.

After Saturday, float tubers will be able to regularly enter Puddingstone, however, they will be restricted to fishing from Sailboat Cove to along the picnic area. They will have to pay $12 - the same fee for launching a boat - and must wear a life preserver life preserver, a personal flotation device (PFD) intended to keep the wearer afloat, particularly in case of shipwreck. A Type I PFD will keep even unconscious people afloat in a face–up position; it is the most common type used at sea. .

LaMont said that originally the tubers were confined to fish in Sailboat Cove, but a request from anglers to expand the fishing area was eventually granted.

``They say some of the bigger fish are not in that area,'' she said.

That means boaters and float tubers may be playing the same waters, something that is not a concern at Santa Fe Dam because of the size of the lake.

``We checked with Lake Perris Lake Perris State Recreation Area, or simply Lake Perris, is a reservoir that was completed in 1973. It is the southern terminus of the California State Water Project. It is situated in a mountain-rimmed valley between Moreno Valley, and Perris. , which allows float tubers, and they don't have a problem between boaters and float tubers,'' she said. ``Plus, the float tubers will only be allowed in the slow boat areas.''

The tournament will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for the largest trout, catfish and bass.

The contest is free, and there will be no additional charge for float tubers. Anglers will have to pay the $6 car entrance fee. There will be a continental breakfast for the first 50 contestants that sign up, and there will also be float tubes available for those who do not have one. The tubes will be available for one-hour increments and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Anglers must bring their own waders and fins, however. A valid California Sport Fishing License is also required.
