Freeway democracy

Re "HOV lane HOV lane

on 405 gains big wheels" (Feb. 21):

Has anyone ever seen more local, state and federal politicians all united behind one cause than over the funding for a car-pool lane on the 405 Freeway? Then again, has anyone ever seen a politician without a tax- paid driver chauffeuring him or her all over town?

Car-pool lanes and politicians have one thing in common: Neither works for the greater good of all. It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a  to restore democracy on our public freeway system and make the car-pool lane equally accessible to all motorists alike.

What's best for Ruby

Re "Ruby the elephant deserves retirement" (Feb. 19):

The decision to send Ruby to sanctuary is long overdue, and the price isn't just right -- it's the right thing to do. I cannot imagine any compassionate human who would deny Ruby the opportunity to spend her final years in a place that caters to the needs of these gentle giants.

The L.A. Zoo management needs to show it really does want to do what is best for the animals by allowing Ruby to retire and sending her to sanctuary.

Self-inflicted wounds

Re "Venezuela adds to Chavez powers" (Briefly, Feb. 1):

The next order of business for our newly elected Congress should be to make it a law or at least a policy of the United States that "asylum shall not be granted to people who self-inflict upon not only themselves but future generations a dictatorship."

They celebrate today with Hugo Chavez, and 10 years from now they will be at our door crying about how hard life is back in Venezuela. Bad choices should not be rewarded. Reap what you have sown. Woe unto thee.

Banning cars

Every day we hear about car bombers running rampant in various parts of Iraq and killing many innocent people. Sending more troops there won't solve the problem. Perhaps if all cars were banned from being used and everyone was made to walk, the deaths of innocent Iraqi civilians and coalition troops would decrease because these suicide murderers would get tired of walking and lugging heavy loads of explosives.

According to George

"Government isn't reason; it's not eloquence; it's force. Like fire, it's a dangerous servant and a fearful master." Does that sound like some anti- authority radical? It's from one of America's greatest patriots -- George Washington.

I'm sure it can apply to government at all levels. Majority can be as bad as a tyrant.
