Dream on, mayor

Re "Taking back our schools" (April 14):

I will hit on one item only: "The school day could be expanded to 5 p.m. and include enrichment activities." I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
what kind of life the mayor has, but teachers need one - and it's already drastically short. What with lesson planning, homework and other after-hours duties, like calling parents and other civic duties, teachers hardly have a life of their own.

The traffic rush hour starts just about the time schools are let out and there are thousands of students who are bused daily to and from their neighborhoods. But, according to according to
prep.
1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians.

2. In keeping with: according to instructions.

3.
another item on the list, that will be a thing of the past, if: "Limit a school to 500 students at most, doubling the number of schools to 1,480." Dream on, mayor.

Not his job

I think the mayor wanting to take over the L.A. school district is just a power grab and the L.A. City Council should remind the mayor that his job is to manage the business of the city of Los Angeles
For the city, see Los Angeles, California.
The City of Los Angeles was a streamlined passenger train jointly operated by the Chicago and North Western Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad.
.

I also think that the mayor is using staffers whose salaries are paid out of our taxes to find a way for him to take over the L.A. school district. Managing the school district is not part of the mayor's duties, and no one on the mayor's staff should be allowed to use taxpayer money to work on a project that is not part of managing the business of the city of Los Angeles.

Again homeowners

Re "Mayor backs trash fee" (April 13):

Mayor Villaraigosa wants to increase the size of the police department and plans to finance the project by increasing trash pickup rates charged to L.A.'s homeowners. Everyone generates trash and everyone will benefit from a larger police force. Therefore, the mayor et al need to devise an equitable method whereby all who will benefit and who reside in Los Angeles will also share in the costs.

Mahony's files

Good Samaritan
. Sadly, he was not in your neighborhood last week. However, I saw him at the corner of Moorpark and Van Nuys Boulevard last Thursday afternoon. A wheelchair-bound, dirt-encrusted man started across the boulevard as the light turned green, but was barely five feet into the crosswalk when the indicator began flashing.

A much older gentleman in suit and tie, waiting to cross in the other direction put his own plans on hold, to safely assist the other pedestrian. Many would have been put off by the first man's appearance, but clearly his "angel" was not. Yes, Mayvis, there still is kindness in our world.

Homeowners only

Re "Billion sought to fix streets" (April 13):

If approved by the voters, the bond money would be used to repair the city's streets, yet only the homeowners will have to pay more taxes for about 20 more years. Does that mean only homeowners will be allowed to travel on the newly repaired streets?

Business vs labor

Re "Migrant market relies on recruits" (April 16):

I read in the Daily News about businesses paying smugglers to bring in workers from below the border. They don't want to pay American workers a living wage. They don't want to help with medical insurance. They don't want to help with retirement programs. But they sure expect us to buy their products.

The same people ...

Re "Crosswalk ticket stirs world anger" (April 14):

I'm a police officer (not LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.
2. LAPD - Los Angeles Police Department.
). How dare all these people vilify this Officer Kelly for doing his job? Yes, he could have helped this senior cross the street and given her a warning, but he also legally had every right to cite this woman for a violation of the vehicle code. The same people complaining about this officer's decision to cite this woman are the same people who are honking their horns and cursing at our seniors when they step into the crosswalk and hold up traffic.

Everyone wants to line up and take shots at this officer now? You want to ignore all the good things that this man has done in his career? You want to slander this man's name and bring more shame to the officers who put their lives on the line everyday to protect your rights and civil liberties?

Still a good lesson

Re "Senior cross over walking ticket" (April 10):

As a teacher, we always taught children to "Wait for the new green light." That might not still be adequate, but it might help.

Zine responds

Re "Badge abuse" (Editorial, April 16):

I read your recent editorial about my LAPD reserve work. I am both proud and honored to serve as a councilman for the Third District and an LAPD reserve officer. After 37 years as a full-time and reserve LAPD officer, I continue my commitment to public safety.

I will never apologize for working to improve the quality of life for all residents. By continuing to work as an LAPD reserve officer, I have an opportunity to review and shape policies impacting the LAPD. I also experience firsthand the indispensable role LAPD officers play in serving, protecting and interacting with our diverse communities, despite the potential for danger.

Into their hands

The Daily News' Monday headline, "April's U.S. death count at 47 in Iraq" does nothing but play into the hands of al-Qaida and the Iraqi insurgents Insurgents, in U.S. history, the Republican Senators and Representatives who in 1909–10 rose against the Republican standpatters controlling Congress, to oppose the Payne-Aldrich tariff and the dictatorial power of House speaker Joseph G. Cannon. . It sounds like you are backing their side. You know that they are fighting this war in the press. If you want to make headlines with deaths, why not publish all the murders, hit-and-run deaths, here in Los Angeles County, which has become the Baghdad of the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. Photo op potholes

While traveling from Sun Valley to Sylmar on Monday by way of Glenoaks and returning via San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the , I passed the time counting potholes. I figure there's enough potholes to allow Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa three photo opportunities a day for the rest of his term.
