PUBLIC FORUM.You work for us Re "Sanctuaries in the spotlight" (Aug. 21): I couldn't believe my eyes when I read the mayor's quote on immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important. . Telling us that " ... I can tell you, when families are torn apart, our communities are torn apart" sounds so incredibly stupid coming from a man who "tore apart" his own family in exchange for the latest, cutest, new girl. Why is the mayor so concerned about the 40 percent of the L.A. population that is foreign-born? The voting citizens voted him in. It is these taxpayers whom he owes his allegiance to. In this case, Michael Vick has two witnesses against him, so why is any deal being considered? He should be prosecuted and let a jury and judge determine what he should get -- not a side deal. As far as I am concerned, they can throw him in jail for a long time. There was no excuse for what he did. -- Frank Jacobs Sylmar Good money after bad Re "City to study homeowner bailout fund" (Aug. 15): Bailing out homeowners because they cannot afford their homes is not our problem and it is not a state or federal problem. If a purchaser of a home didn't have the wherewithal to intelligently purchase a home, then they will have to face the consequences. Giving homeowners a loan of $10,000 will only delay the inevitable and is the most ludicrous suggestion I have ever heard. You would most certainly be putting good money after bad. Not one tax dime should be spent helping these people. Wilson doesn't get it. Identifying former LAPD officer Todd Natow as the person who released an alligator alligator, large aquatic reptile of the genus Alligator, in the same order as the crocodile. There are two species—a large type found in the S United States and a small type found in E China. Alligators differ from crocodiles in several ways. in a public park (endangering every child and adult in that park) in no way implies that there is a connection between Natow's employment as an LAPD officer and his foolish, reckless, criminal act. There is an enormous difference between police officers and the plumbers, accountants and news editors that Wilson speaks of. Unlike most other professions, police officers carry guns and therefore have power of life and death, as well as the responsibility that goes with that power. There is certainly a need to mention his former employment because police officers should be held to a higher standard than people in other professions. Wouldn't Wilson agree that is how police officers earn the respect they so often demand? -- Tony Nathanson Encino Pandering Democrats Re "Anti-tax zealots Zealots (zĕl`əts), Jewish faction traced back to the revolt of the Maccabees (2d cent.
