Getting there safely

Re "New road rules (Our Opinions, July 2):

I drive the 5 Freeway from Burbank to Anaheim every morning. The commute is 37 miles but can take up to 1.5 hours. If you leave more than one car length in front of you, the Type A -- "Move Over" drivers will swerve out from behind and cut back in front of you. There are accidents every morning from the "Move Over" crowd who do not keep a safe distance and cannot stop safely.

Antonio's affair

Those of you who think that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. Ruthless people

Re "TV anchor put on leave while ethics studied" (July 6):

Mirthala Salinas now wants the same ruthless media machine that cares for no one's privacy to respect hers. Ha. How many times has she ignored that same request from others just to get a story? How does it now feel to be on the other side of the mike?

Also, since her station is now conducting a review of her ethics in reporting, why doesn't our city do the same to the mayor? How many times did he meet with her under the disguise of business, on city time, when in fact it was for something else? How many times did he use a city vehicle or city resources to meet with her?

And finally, Mirthala, do you really think he can be trusted and will not cheat again? If you do, you will get what you deserve.

Verdict windfall

Re "Verdict: $6.2 million, maybe more" (July 4):

I grew up, a girl-child, with four brothers who teased me unmercifully. At firefighters' salaries, health care, and pension plans, I could tolerate a little tormenting. Too bad the taxpayers continually are responsible for these huge payouts ripped from our wallets. It's time a law is introduced with a ceiling of $10,000 on discrimination lawsuits.

I called 911 and the patrol car came quick enough to catch them red- handed, still igniting them. However, they stayed less than a minute and the violators told them, "We're done," and they left. Where is the expensive citation to discourage this behavior next year? Due to our mayor and police chief's policies, it appears that the police can no longer be proactive or do their jobs.

Pick your punk

Re "Beyond repair" (Your Opinions, July 5):

Paul Vaughn thinks Villaraigosa, the punk, should resign for behaving similar to his fellow punks Clinton and JFK.

I wonder who he's voting for for president. First, there's Giuliani, who told the world about his affair before telling his wife. Then there's McCain, who cheated on his wife with an ex-cheerleader so that he could launch his political career. Maybe Vaughn is waiting for Newt Gingrich to enter the race. After all, Gingrich couldn't wait for his wife to recover from cancer surgery before letting her know that he had found himself another woman. Who's your punk?

Who could they be?

Re "Is Congress irrelevant?" (Our Opinions, July 3):

Your editorial pointed out that Congress has a 14 percent approval rating. Who could they be? Are there that many in their extended families, their staff and their staff's extended families? I've never met anyone else who approves of what Congress is doing. Or is willing to say so in public.
