We have to fix it

Your Jan. 11 editorial, ``Iraq's last chance,'' was right on the mark. As you said, we broke it, and collectively we have to fix it. Granted, mistakes have been made, but for people to constantly carp at the president without coming up with some constructive solutions does a major disservice dis·ser·vice

What I find particularly galling are some Democrat leaders who call for a ``phased withdrawal'' without any consideration for whether or not the Iraqis are even ready to shoulder the burden in the vacuum. This will invite more Islamic extremists, and they won't stop there. The American people An American people may be:

Deliver us from evil

Re ``More U.S. troops will be sent to back Iraqis in ending chaos'' (Jan. 11):

Surrender never works, but the surrender crowd never learns. President George W. Bush's biggest mistake was listening to his generals, but when he corrects it by switching to generals who will fight, do his critics rejoice? No. They want to run away even faster. Abraham Lincoln was in danger of losing the Civil War until he replaced generals who wouldn't fight with Ulysses S Ulysses: see Odysseus.

Shows his hand

Re ``More U.S. troops will be sent to back Iraqis in ending chaos'' (Jan. 11):

President George W. Bush, outlining his decision to send more American troops into the Iraq conflict, has finally shown his hand. He has never had any intention of leaving Iraq but is intent on occupying it for years to come, with American bases and personnel, just as we have in Korea and Germany.

Should this surprise anyone who knows how he lied to the American people to justify his invasion of that sovereign nation?

Not their children

Re ``More U.S. troops will be sent to back Iraqis in ending chaos'' (Jan. 11):

President George W. Bush plans to commit more than 20,000 additional Americans, our young men and young women, to this ``surge'' in Iraq. I failed to hear that he was planning to send over any of the Bush or Cheney family members. How come this job is always for someone else's children?

. If the rules stated that the prize was for the first baby born in the new year to a mother who was a legal U.S. resident, why didn't the company stick to its rules? I can't believe how the company kowtowed to pressure from the Chinese-American advocates and gave the $25,000 to a child despite the rules. Apparently the parents of the child don't mind having it known that they are in this country illegally. Not their problem

Re ``Carted away'' (Jan. 9):

Someone who takes a cart home from a market should have to pay a cart deposit and should get a complete refund when the cart is returned. What City Councilman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley.  is talking about only penalizes the markets, and then the markets will have to raise prices to recover a preventable loss.

A solution is simple: Require a $50 deposit, which is 100 percent refundable upon returning the cart to the store. Impose a $250 fine on anyone who fails to post the deposit and is caught pushing a cart down the street. You do this one time, and I guarantee that shopper will not be taking carts home again.

You may say, but these are poor people and they can't afford a cart deposit, much less a fine. Well, that's not the supermarket's problem.
