Be thankful

Why the front-page headlines about a ``City Hall sex scandal''? Every day, taxpayers are getting screwed by our government and there's never any mention about it. Granted, there is a difference; the services rendered by our government are certainly not as gratifying grat·i·fy

If he knew

Re ``Foley's messages being examined'' (Oct. 2):

If Speaker of the House Dennis Hastart knew about Rep. Mark Foley's e-mails to the House pages and did not report it to the proper authorities for investigation (and I don't mean the House Ethics Committee ethics committee A multidisciplinary hospital body composed of a broad spectrum of personnel–eg, physicians, nurses, social workers, priests, and others, which addresses the moral and ethical issues within the hospital. Hotter, colder ...

Re ``The answer? Yes'' (Your Opinions, Oct. 3):

All scientists agree that Earth goes through hot and cold cycles. It has been hotter than it is presently and it has been colder. Most agree that we are in a warming cycle, but not everyone agrees that man is the primary cause this time. The data can also be interpreted that the temperature rises, then the carbon dioxide content carbon dioxide content CO2 content Arterial blood gases A measure of the relative blood concentration of CO2, measured using pH electrodes, by enzymes, or based on changes in pH Ref range < age 2–18-28 mmol/L; > 2 yrs–venous  increases. Millions of years ago, before man was around, the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere was 20 times higher than it is now. There is no fossil evidence of species extinction during that period.

If the government can convince people that they can stop this global warming global warming, the gradual increase of the temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere as a result of the increase in greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution.  by imposing more taxes or fees, they will impose them, but it will accomplish little more than providing jobs for bureaucrats.

Banning Harry

Re ``Mom battles Harry Potter'' (Oct. 4):

Why is everyone so down on Harry Potter? My God, you'd think that J.K. Rowlings rewrote ``Mein Kampf'' for our generation. It's a fantasy book, people. Get a grip on reality. Bush and traffic

Re ``Fundraiser lures president to L.A.'' (Oct. 4):

President Bush ties up rush-hour traffic just to go to yet another fundraiser. It just proves that Bush and the Republicans don't care about anybody except their rich corporate pals.

Bratton for governor

Wednesday morning, I saw them interview Chief Bratton regarding school safety, who stated that we have too many guns and our government needs to work on the issues here in the USA rather than the rest of the world. I totally agree.

We want freedoms, yet we lock our schools; we have homeless people all around, yet we are spending our resources in other countries; we have unemployment, and we outsource our jobs overseas and allow illegals to work here and send their money back to their country and not pay taxes. (They are good workers; what happened to our youths who used to work those jobs? Are the jobs below them?) Our troops are sent overseas for way too long and we need them here. The National Guard is to guard our nation, not another one.

Air travel progress?

In 1950, I flew on my first transcontinental flight Transcontinental flight is travelling by air from the Atlantic Ocean coast to the Pacific Ocean coast, or in the reverse.

The first transcontinental flight was made by Calbraith Perry Rodgers to win the prize offered by publisher William Randolph Hearst.

I have just returned on the same flight out of New York New York, state, United States

With the current delays due to security, parking space shortage and horrendous auto traffic at both ends, coupled with the inefficiency of modern-day airlines, i.e., average baggage handling and flight delays, the door-to-door time period for transcontinental travel has changed very little.

Back in 1950, we were served box lunches by pretty stewardesses who worshipped us passengers like gods. After a 50-year experience with hot meals, we have progressed back to box lunches, served by sloppy-looking stewards and stewardesses with attitude problems. Worse yet, they now charge us five bucks for the box lunches.

Coming calamities

Despite Al Gore's ``Inconvenient Truth,'' with dire warnings of a global warming which threatens all mankind, Republican Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma delivered a speech on the Senate floor last week challenging journalists to report accurately on global warming. The skeptical Inhofe explained that some scientific studies have recently shown that the Antarctic is actually getting colder and the ice is growing. Further, a leading member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Russian Academy of Sciences (Russian: Росси́йская Акаде́мия Нау́к,  predicted long-term global cooling

Apparently scientific studies can be found to support either theory. If you really want to ponder an ``inconvenient truth,'' consider the coming calamities prophesied in the Bible's book of Revelation, Chapters 15 and 16.

Time to remember

Coincidence?

Do you see what I see? Of course. An election coming up and gas prices going down. It's the same old story. And it happens over and over.

The Republicans are in a frenzy. They see their control in Congress fading ... so what can they do about it? Give the public lower gas prices, and when the election is over -- the shaft. Up go the prices. Don't bet that gas prices will stay low. Chances are you'll see a $4 price by January 2007.
