How hard is it?

Re ``Group urges third term for city officials'' (July 14):

George Kieffer said, ``The way the system works now, people are just learning their job and then they have to leave.'' If you are running for office, you should know how the system works. Why does the taxpayer have to pay for OJT OJT On-The-Job Training
OJT Office de Justification des Tirages (predecessor of OJD)
 (on-the-job training)?

If it takes four to eight years to learn the job, we elected the wrong person. If you can't get it done in eight years, what makes them think another four years will get results. During the campaigns, all we hear is what's ``wrong'' with the system and what ``they'' are going to do to fix it. The blah, blah, blah is the same; only the faces have changed.

Chief Bratton and his elite staff are certainly ahead of the curve by seeking law lengthening prison sentences for lily-livered convicted robbers who wear a mask in a crime.

Rogue terrorists get away with this kind of behavior all over the world, but it must stop in America. Thanks, chief, and we hope our California Legislature is fast-acting on this one.

Appreciating Bratton

Re ``Council members request an investigation into police chief'' (July 14):

I'm appalled at the pettiness of the five City Council members who sent a letter to the Police Commission. If they can't take criticism then they shouldn't be in public office. We have brave soldiers fighting a war so we can exercise our First Amendment rights. How dare these five City Council members try to take that away from Chief Bratton.

We should be thankful, grateful and appreciate Chief Bratton, who has turned around a once deteriorating and demoralized de·mor·al·ize

Gang hero? Not!

Re ``From gangsta Noun 1. gangsta - (Black English) a member of a youth gang

I was amazed that the front page and numerous pages inside were given to Spider gangsta as a tribute. What about the fact that he's cost the public taxpayers for years due to his criminal activities as well as being a distinct danger to the innocent community at large.

What a stupid idea to honor him instead of the many thousands of law-abiding, hardworking, respectful young people graduating from high schools and colleges at this time of year. Get a grip and stop glamorizing these thugs. Oh yeah, and three kids from different girls: I'll bet I'll Bet was an NBC game show that aired from March 29 1965 to September 24 1965, that was created by Ralph Andrews. The host of this program was Jack Narz. It was a precursor of It's Your Bet, which aired with four different hosts during its four year run: Hal March, Tom  that's a great example for our youths. An inspiration

Re ``From gangsta to graduate'' (July 16):

Thank you for the positive and uplifting story on Mario Corona. This young man deserves the front page of the paper. I had tears of joy in my eyes In My Eyes was a Boston straight edge band that spearheaded the 1997 youth crew revival along with Ten Yard Fight, Bane, The Trust, Fastbreak and Floorpunch. The band and its members were a part of the hot bed that was the Boston music scene in the late 90's and early 2000's.  the entire time reading his story. Bravo, Mario Corona, I read your story to my son; you are an inspiration to anyone. With all the bad and negative news in the world, it is nice to hear a happy ending.

Re ``Rush on HOV-lane permits for hybrids'' (July 16):

Before the Daily News balks too much at hybrid use in the car-pool lane, perhaps you should note how the overall car-pool lane usage is doing. You'll find -- as I did with a simple Google search Google is owned by Google, Inc. whose mission statement is to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful". The largest search engine on the web, Google receives several hundred million queries each day through its various services.  that leads to Mu.S. Census data -- that our car-pool lane usage in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  has been steadily declining since 2000.

In fact, more people are driving solo. I have to be fair and admit I've been proudly driving a hybrid since 2004. But shame on the Daily News for making hybrid drivers feel bad about a perk meant to encourage greater energy efficiency and less oil dependency.

The press's duty

Re ``Demand Israel pity civilians'' (Their Opinions, July 17):

The reason that Americans have supported Israel to the tune of $140 billion is that they are the lone country in the Middle East that is a responsible, caring democracy, home to many Jews, but also to Christians, Muslims and Druze, Bahai religions that want to live in peace. To print a column presenting Israel as an evil empire is tantamount to giving aid and comfort to our enemies.

Israel

Israel has been in a state of war since it was created. The times of calm were never truly calm. They were times of hostage crisis When a surrounded terrorist or criminal tries to hold off the authorities by force, it is considered a "barricaded suspect" situation. When a person/s holds others against their will, but keeps them hidden, it is simple kidnapping. , terrorist attacks and rocket fire attacks from every border. The world has generally always responded in condemnation of Israel, and ordered it to show restraint.

Again the same situation has occurred. I suppose that Israel, as a true democracy (where Muslims, Christians, and Jews live), is the only player in the region that has the tools to control its own people. However, why would Israel show restraint when Hamas entered Israeli soil again to kill and capture soldiers in the south, and Hezbollah in the north doing the same? Why do the world leaders For a list of heads of state, see .

Who hasn't?

Re ``Cop stops knit blacks in anger'' (Viewpoint, July 16):

Sharon Woodson-Bryant's unpleasant experiences with cops seems no worse or no better than some of mine. Yet she attributes these incidents to her being black and to racial profiling The consideration of race, ethnicity, or national origin by an officer of the law in deciding when and how to intervene in an enforcement capacity.

Police officers often profile certain types of individuals who are more likely to perpetrate crimes.
. Who hasn't been stopped by the police thinking, ``Why me? Those other guys were speeding too!''

Well, I'm Latino and I've never chalked it up to racial profiling, just to speeding. I don't doubt there is profiling by law enforcement. Maybe when the majority of crimes stop being committed by blacks and Latinos, racial profiling will stop. Until that happens, innocent minorities will continue to be targeted.

Political Rose

Re ``Foisted on readers'' (Your Opinions, July 14):

I would like to echo the sentiments of Gary Helm, except that my ire is directed at the obviously conservative ``Rose is Rose.'' This unbelievably offensive comic strip comic strip, combination of cartoon with a story line, laid out in a series of pictorial panels across a page and concerning a continuous character or set of characters, whose thoughts and dialogues are indicated by means of "balloons" containing written speech. , while expertly drawn, displays an intact family, in which a small boy (with a guardian angel, no less), who loves his parents and doesn't think either is an idiot is clearly opposite to the liberal agenda, which wants such families obliterated o·blit·er·ate

Freeway murals

Along the L.A. freeways, the majority of the graffiti I see these days is found on the murals that someone thought would beautify this city. Instead these murals have become a ``safe zone'' for graffiti vandals. After much money was spent creating these murals, no one has any interest in maintaining them.

Perhaps it is time to cover the vandalized murals with gray paint, and consider it a lesson learned. What a waste.
