Re ``Prudish L.A. nixes `Hooters This article is about the two restaurant chains collectively using the shared Hooters brand. For other uses, see Hooters (disambiguation).
Hooters is the trade name of two privately held American restaurant chains: Hooters of America, Inc based in Atlanta, Georgia, and
 for Neuters''' (June 28):

I'm so glad that Laura Chick, Jack Weiss and Ed Boks can be outraged by women in skimpy costumes raising money for a much-needed cause. Where has their outrage been for the past 20 years as thousands of animals lived in substandard shelters and died needlessly at the hands of the city's antiquated animal policies?

City officials are very good at pretending to care and extremely good at refusing help that might actually solve the problem. It is ludicrous for city officials to criticize Hooters, a legitimate business, at the same time it takes tax dollars from them. Their money is green and the animals could care less if a bikini contest helps them enjoy better quality of life.

Prigs and prudes

Re ``Prudish L.A. nixes `Hooters for Neuters''' (June 28):

Let's get this right -- the Puritans, prigs and prudes that run the city think it's OK to sell alcohol, lottery tickets, wear bikinis at the beach and have bikini-clad babes on billboards, but they won't accept money to save the lives of helpless animals from a bikini contest sponsored by Hooters?

Next they'll demand 1920s bathing suits at the seashore and frilly frill

Honest politics

Re ``New LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  draft reduces schools' role'' (June 24):

If the mayor cannot do the job he was elected to do for the people of Los Angeles as the mayor, why would anyone think he can run the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. ? The problem is that too much money controls the way politics are run in this country.

The superintendent's job should be an elected six-year term, which allows the people to decide who has the best plan to help educate the children of this city. Secondly, the board of education should be eliminated entirely because the people on this board are either bought and paid for by the Eli Broads or teachers union. Let the neighborhood community councils elect one representative to serve on the school board. The neighborhood community councils are the last hope to bring back honest politics in Los Angeles.

Double standards

Re ``Double standard for illegal immigrants'' (Their Opinions, June 23):

The biggest double standard in question is the one Ed Morales is asking for -- that illegal people be allowed to circumvent the laws of the nation. We are a welcoming nation to the law-abiding immigrants who have graced our shores for the past 200-plus years.

Illegals take USA citizens' Social Security numbers, fake our driver's licenses, overwhelm emergency-room medical services and do not pay anywhere near the appropriate taxes the lawful citizens do in this country. Morales' plea to grant special rights to illegal citizens is the biggest double standard I can think of.

Rapid bus line

Re ``Mayor heralds new Rapid line in Valley'' (June 24):

Manuel Criollo Criollo

of the Bus Riders Union is quoted as saying that Metro ``had no expansion plans for Rapid bus'' before they got involved. The reality is quite different. The first two Rapid bus lines -- on Wilshire and Ventura boulevards -- began operation in June of 2000, and in September of 2002 a plan was formulated to expand the network of Rapid lines systemwide.

One such line operates on Van Nuys Boulevard and just celebrated its third anniversary in service by this week beginning operations with 60-foot articulated buses, to better handle the overwhelming ridership on the line.

No secret left behind

Occupied lands

Re ``Uncivilized war'' (Your Opinions, June 27):

Hey, Dolly. ``The land belongs to Israel.'' What nonsense. Germany, Italy and Japan ``won'' many lands in many battles they fought. The world did not allow them to occupy these lands.

Just why should Israel be treated any different?

Don't read it

Re ``Not a comic strip'' (Your Opinions, June 27):

Please, take Madelyne's advice and remove ``Mallard Fillmore.'' Then let's move onward and demand that bookstores stop carrying tomes by Rush Limbaugh and Al Franken, and that video rental stores no longer accept ``docuganda'' films from Michael Moore.

Once we have established the beachhead, we can start burning anything else that does not meet our individual guidelines -- then petition Congress to repeal the First Amendment. Madelyne might note that it is pretty easy not to read something one does not care for.

Need our gnats

Re ``Not a comic strip'' (Your Opinions, June 27):

OK, if you want to put ``Mallard mallard: see duck.

It's a big joke

Re ``Not a comic strip'' (Your Opinions, June 27):

Madelyne Barnett was totally correct when she wrote that Mallard Fillmore is not a comic strip. The funny thing is, the artist (and I use that term loosely) Tinsley doesn't consider his creation a comic strip either and is laughing all the way to the bank. Funny standard

Did anyone actually read that N.Y. Times headline? ``U.S. examines bank records in secret to track terror'' (June 23).

Wow! I examine my bank records in secret, too. And here I had no idea I was supposed to go out into the middle of the street to balance my checkbook, and call the neighbors over to watch.

World circus

After watching the Italian soccer team perform (theatrically, not athletically) I decided that this is the last time I will ever waste my time watching the World Cup. Between the Italians doing their things and some of the referees doing theirs, this event turned into a circus full of performing clowns.
