A Romer or Roamer is a simple device for accurately plotting a grid reference on a map.

Re ``Goldberg to head LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA) ?'' (Feb. 21):

Jackie Goldberg Jackie Goldberg (born June 16, 1937) is an American politician and teacher, and a member of the Democratic Party. She is a former member of the California State Assembly.  as head of the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. ? This is a woman who tried to downgrade education in California The California education system consists of a full range of public and private schools in California, from the University of California system, to well-known private colleges, to an extensive network of secondary and primary education schools.  by writing a bill saying that textbooks should have no more than 200 pages. Think of the damage she could do by trying to downgrade Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  graduation requirements so that more students would leave with even fewer skills necessary to exist in our world.

Goldberg had her chance. As a school board member, she allowed the schools to continue their slide into oblivion. Who would stop her, since her nephew is the head of United Teachers Los Angeles? I speak as a retired teacher of the LAUSD who began in 1957 and remembers when our school district was the envy of many others because of its excellence.

Jackie Goldberg for superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District? You've got to be kidding. She is the epitome of what is wrong with California politics. Facing term limits means she is looking for Looking for

Above the fold "Above the fold" is a graphic design concept that refers to the location of an important news story or a visually appealing photograph on the upper half of the front page of a newspaper.  in Tuesday's paper, I read ``Mystery blob eating downtown'' and ``Goldberg to head LAUSD?'' I checked to make sure I hadn't slept until April Fools' Day. Isn't Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg the legislator who wrote AB 756 (which passed in the Assembly) to keep textbooks to 200 pages?

She also voted no on AB 438, which would specify that sex offenders are not a protected class Protected class is a term used in United States anti-discrimination law. The term describes groups of people who are protected from discrimination and harassment. The following characteristics are considered "Protected Classes" and persons cannot be discriminated against based on . The rest of the article seemed to be a puff piece about politicians patting each other on the back. You went into more depth about the ``Idol'' contestant.

Be afraid

Re ``Goldberg to head LAUSD?'' (Feb. 21):

Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. Jackie Goldberg, as part of the safety committee in Sacramento has done all she can to keep sexual predators on the streets. She refuses to do one thing to protect our children and our families, and now she wants to run the Los Angeles Unified School District. No way.

She may be friendly with the unions, but if you are a parent or a child, beware: This woman is not your friend. I'm sure that the union plying her with doughnuts - she always has a bag at hand - will give her all the help she needs. David Tokofsky, beware: Jackie is not good for the LAUSD.

Fraud capital

Re ``Car-theft ring busted after probe'' (Feb. 16):

Am I the only one who is terribly concerned about the ubiquitous fraud rings in the Glendale area? After reading this article, I can't help but think I finally found "Finally Found" was the debut single from the Honeyz. This was their most successful single in the UK and worldwide, securing a number 4 position in the UK singles chart and achieved platinum status in Australia [1] Tracklisting

my first win-win-win situation. I am being facetious. The ring slapped charities, insurance companies and the Internal Revenue Service. All are defrauded, and we, the innocents, pick up the tab. I am tired of reading the articles and scared that Glendale is becoming the fraud capital of California.

Willy and Nicole

Re ``Willy's such a pig'' (Feb. 21):

The story about Willy and Nicole was very touching and beautiful. One can only hope that L.A. Zoo officials don't wreck this relationship, too, as they have wrecked others (for example, that of elephants Ruby and Gita). It is apparent that Willy and Nicole are attached to each other, and I hope they are allowed to stay together even if a new bongo bongo (bŏng`gō), spiral-horned antelope, Boocercus eurycerus, found in jungles and thick bamboo forests of equatorial Africa. Shy, elusive animals, bongos never emerge into the open and are seldom seen; they browse singly or in small  comes into the picture. L.A. A love story

It's here

Re ``Sunshine politics'' (Editorials, Feb. 20):

Sunshine Canyon trash dump is here, and wishing it was somewhere else will not make the trash go away. The taxpayers are not going to provide the money to transport our trash to some distant location. Those who are wishing that the trash dump was somewhere else should put their effort in finding cost-effective ways to recycle the trash and ways to convert trash to energy. Recover methane gas from the trash and generate power from a modern trash incinerator.

RENEW LA plan

Re ``Sunshine Canyon'' (Your Opinions, Feb. 21):

Leslie Bittenson wrote a letter praising Greig Smith's plan that he calls ``RENEW LA'' (for ``recovering energy, natural resources and economic benefit from waste for Los Angeles''). She said that the City Council should renew the residential-waste contract with Browning Ferris Industries. Obviously, she has not read the councilman's plan because the council cannot renew the contract for five years and implement RENEW LA at the same time.

RENEW LA calls for reduction in the waste going to Sunshine - by 600 tons at the end of this year, by 1,000 tons at the end of next year, by 1,000 tons at the end of the third year and by 500 tons after that. Sixty-three percent of the residents of Los Angeles told the mayor in his budget survey that they are willing to pay more. It can be done by splitting the waste stream and not just re-signing the current contract.

Criticism valid

Your editorial ``Bond bickering'' (Feb. 21) makes me wonder if your editorial board really thought through its position. California is awash in billions of dollars worth of unpaid government obligations. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's $222 billion infrastructure proposal, while noble, includes almost $70 billion in bonds, which will most certainly be a burden to future generations of Californians.

Why does the Daily News dismiss any attempt to modify the governor's grand plan as pure politics? After all the Daily News would be justified to criticize state officials if they rushed into accepting a bad deal.

The greater sin?

Ken Starr tried to kill President Bill Clinton politically for engaging in consensual sex with an adult. Now Ken Starr is trying to save the life of a man who raped and killed an underage girl. Starr is a man who teaches law at Pepperdine University Pepperdine University is a private institution of higher learning affiliated with the Church of Christ in unincorporated Los Angeles County, California, United States. The university's location overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is adjacent to the city limits of Malibu. . Go figure.

O'Reilly wrong, again

Re ``Oscar should ask, 'What would Clint do?''' (Viewpoint, Feb. 19):

Once again, right-wing Bill O'Reilly Bill O'Reilly may refer to:
  • Bill O'Reilly (commentator) (born 1949), American political commentator and author
  • Bill O'Reilly (cricketer) (1905–1992), Australian cricketer and broadcaster
gets it wrong. In ``Brokeback Mountain,'' the subject is love. O'Reilly cannot even bring himself to call the characters in ``Brokeback'' gay. Then, within a transparent attempt to seem sympathetic to gay suffering, he calls homosexuality a ``predilection.''

``Predilection'' keeps homosexuality in the lesser realm of ``preference,'' rather than in the higher state of ``natural innateness.'' What would Clint do? I imagine Eastwood would defend ``Brokeback Mountain,'' just as he deflected criticism of his own ``Million Dollar Baby'' before it went on to gather Oscar gold.

Getting it towed

Re ``Abandoned car blues'' (Your Opinions, Feb. 116):

There are many residents who can relate stories similar to the one told by JoAnn Paris. Here is a little tip given to me by a police officer years ago: When no action is taken on an abandoned car, push it out to the middle of the street. It will be towed very quickly.
