PUBLIC FORUM.We like it Re ``Us or them'' (Nov. 10): We the voters have spoken, and we've decided we like things the way they are. We like gerrymandered districts controlled by union puppeteers. We want to overspend o·ver·spend v. o·ver·spent , o·ver·spend·ing, o·ver·spends v.intr. On a local level we want our property taxes raised. Some argue they want reform, just not this reform. So where are their counterproposals? That's an alibi, not legitimate voter rejection. Too often we blame Bush, Cheney, Schwarzenegger, Nuez, et al. for our current state of affairs, but it's not their fault. We (mis)choose our leaders and our destiny, election after election after election. - Kelli McAllister Van Nuys Do the right thing Re ``Arnold losing big'' (Nov. 9): Tuesday's statewide vote on Arnold Schwarzenegger's four propositions amounted to a no confidence vote on his leadership. The people have now spoken decisively. Arnold should take this message like a man. He should resign and let someone else lead. - Robert Porter Robert Porter is the name of:
Burbank Davis is smiling Re ``Arnold losing big'' (Nov. 9): With a $100-plus million campaign, full of lies and distortions (as well as vicious personal attacks on our governor), the union bosses have misled voters to maintain the ``status quo [Latin, The existing state of things at any given date.] Status quo ante bellum means the state of things before the war. The status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy. .'' There will be no attempt to control the state budget, your dues will continue to be used for whatever purpose without your consent, schoolteachers will continue to achieve tenure after only two years (whether they are competent or not) and there will be no changes in the ever-changing representative districts. I'll bet I'll Bet was an NBC game show that aired from March 29 1965 to September 24 1965, that was created by Ralph Andrews. The host of this program was Jack Narz. It was a precursor of It's Your Bet, which aired with four different hosts during its four year run: Hal March, Tom former Governor Gray Davis has a big grin on his face. How sad. - Robert Kunz Canoga Park Just wait It's nice to know that a lot of Californians have disposable income disposable income Portion of an individual's income over which the recipient has complete discretion. To assess disposable income, it is necessary to determine total income, including not only wages and salaries, interest and dividend payments, and business profits, but also to pay more taxes in the coming years. This state (just like any household) cannot continue to spend more than it takes in. This is just another reason to leave this state because if you think it's expensive now, then just wait. - Robert D. Henri Tarzana Bamboozled again Re ``Arnold losing big'' (Nov. 9): Shame, shame on you lazy Republicans who failed to vote, and shame on you ``sheeple'' who were bamboozled by the lying unions who obviously put their own self interests ahead of the state. So let's just go on spending ourselves into oblivion and continue letting the politicians determine who will be elected. Next you'll be wanting to change the name of our state to the People's Republic People's Republic n. Studio City Check, please Re ``Us or them'' (Nov. 10): I'd say California voters have expressed their feelings rather clearly regarding the necessity of this election. L.A. lateness What is going on with L.A. County's vote counting. Your Nov. 9 headline, ``Abortion measure finding favor with voters'' would have been very different if L.A. County had not taken until almost 5 a.m. to finish its vote count. Since L.A. was 23.3 percent of all the votes cast statewide, it was the crucial deciding county for several of the propositions. Why the delay? Only one county finished reporting later (Stanislaus). Thirty-nine counties finished before midnight, 14 others before 2 a.m. and three before 3 a.m., which left L.A. County at 4:57 a.m. and Stanislaus at 6:57 a.m. - Diana Dixon-Davis Chatsworth Incredible deal Re ``Mayor defends jet use for trip'' (Nov. 09): The mayor and deputy mayor of Los Angeles going to Detroit for $438 was an incredible deal. A comparison search on expedia.com using first class tickets (a private jet is beyond this class), nonstop and the next day return yielded two tickets on Northwest Airlines for $2,846. Other sites are in this general price neighborhood. I want flights on these private jets. How can I sign up? I'll pay the same rate as the mayor or even a bit more. - John Sax Glendale Killing must stop Re ``Mayor's animal problem'' (Nov. 8): Twenty-six thousand (26,000) animals a year in L.A. alone? How many animals are being killed worldwide? It has to be millions, maybe tens of millions. This holocaust must be stopped. An international treaty banning the killing of animals in animal shelters must be created. - Josh Rivetz Northridge Alarcon responds Re ``Accidents happen'' (Editorial, Nov. 4): My call for the temporary suspension of the Orange Line is not based on ``unfounded fear'' but rather on my experience as a former member of the Metropolitan Transportation Administration's board and as the former chairman of the City Council's Transportation Committee. I do not want to see the Orange Line fail. I want to see it succeed as a safe and cost-effective transportation alternative. But that won't happen if we risk injuries to riders, drivers and motorists. The liability from operating an unsafe line alone can threaten the Orange Line's success by resulting in costly lawsuits that will burden taxpayers and may cause fare hikes. - Richard Alarcon State senator Noun 1. state senator - a member of a state senate senator - a member of a senate Special Order 40 Re ``Homegrown evil exists in our own communities'' (Their Opinions, Nov. 4): Councilman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. The oilmen tell us their all-time record high profits are ``in line'' with industry averages as a percentage of revenues. That's not a satisfying statistic. While the world market for oil has shot up due to Bush's war and Katrina's response, the cost of oil production remains relatively constant. Add a fixed percentage profit margin onto higher prices and, voila voi·là interj. Used to call attention to or express satisfaction with a thing shown or accomplished: Mix the ingredients, chill, and ! higher profits. As oil companies pass the higher market prices on to us consumers, responsible companies would keep their profits at a fixed amount, not a fixed percentage. Congress should enact a windfall profits tax A windfall profits tax is a tax on profits that ensue from a sudden windfall to a particular company or industry. United States In 1980, United States federal legislation was passed that levied such a tax on oil companies because of the profits they earned as a result of immediately, and should rescind the tax-breaks recently given to these gougers in the energy bill. - Bruce Joffe Piedmont Head Start The L.A.
