Bush lied?

Letter writers continue to use that old, worn-out mantra that ``Bush Lied!'' Some variations: ``Newsweek lied/Bush lied,'' ``Dan Rather lied/Bush lied,'' ``Clinton lied/Bush lied,'' ``Nixon lied/Bush lied.'' The comparisons are all part of a vain attempt to find moral equivalence between being untruthful and being mistaken.

Pyrrhic victory

The Democrats' holding on to the filibuster filibuster, term used to designate obstructionist tactics in legislative assemblies. It has particular reference to the U.S. Senate, where the tradition of unlimited debate is very strong. It was not until 1917 that the Senate provided for cloture (i.e.  is small comfort. It's a tool that was used by Strom Thurmond and others who did not want to see all human beings treated equally during the struggle for civil rights in the '60s. This Pyrrhic victory is yet another example of the erosion of our civil liberties in this country. The Democrats should hang their heads in shame about proclaiming a victory by giving in yet again.

Hollywood

A mystery, this is

When it comes to directing action, nobody does it better than George Lucas. Directing actors is another story. His choice of Hayden Christensen - who sucked the life out of every scene he was in - to play Anakin Skywalker in ``Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith'' remains as mysterious as the Force. We have so many talented actors in L.A. Why not take the time to audition them?

To loosely paraphrase Yoda: Big box office alone does not a great movie make.

Dishonorary degree

Re ``Universities need a little Limbaugh'' (Viewpoint, May 15):

At first I thought professor Leonard M. Adelman of USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  was satirizing the pomposity and noble lies of commencement ceremonies when he said he nominated Rush Limbaugh for a USC honorary doctorate for the ``epochal ep·och·al

Can Adelman seriously mean Rush? The man who makes false charges and outright lies about liberalism and liberals, lies sopped up by persons whose heads are so empty of real knowledge that they are transformed into shock troops for the right-wing extremism that threatens our republic today? Colleges are supposed to be places where students learn to use their minds, not lose them. Down the drain

Privatize education

Our free market provided nearly all educational needs from colonial days until well into the 19th century. Home schooling and the one-room school were very common. Private school - supported by parents, churches or charitable institutions - flourished. Our supposedly backward wilderness nation was transformed into the envy of the world without benefit of government subsidies and directives.

Today, our public-school system continues to require more of our tax money while producing declining academic results and increasing social problems. The only viable solution is to separate school and state and return to a tried and proven free market in education.

Tens of thousands of dollars are unnecessarily raised from parents and teachers for materials that the school district is required by law to provide. The Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  and other districts devote less than 1 percent of the budget for materials that actually reach the classroom.

A new Williams case complaint process targets this exact problem. The complaint forms are available at the principal's office of every public school. Because the LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  has not yet adopted a policy to provide adequate supplies, every parent should flood each school with complaints.

We expect the LAUSD vigorously to implement the requirement for providing adequate instructional supplies. After all, it was a party to the five-year Williams lawsuit that resulted in this landmark legislation.

Better symbolism

Re ``Empty symbolism'' (Our Opinions, May 18):

Want to use symbolism to combat Mexico's refusal to extradite killers back to the U.S.? How about a boycott on travel to Mexico? Go to Hawaii, the Bahamas, even Canada, but stay away from Mexico for a few months and the government will surely feel it. Besides, with all of those free-roaming murderers down there, how safe can it be?

Vending lite

Re ``Vending machines still bad for kids?'' (May 8):

I drink a can of soda with my lunch every day. It has zero calories. Total fat: 0; sodium: 40 mg; carbohydrates: 0; and protein: 0. It's also caffeine-free. Caffeine makes me nervous.

Most soft-drink canners offer these sodas. Will someone tell me why these sodas cannot be offered in school vending machines? What more can the food police wish for? It's good for the school and good for the students.

Infamous anniversary

June 4 will mark the 16th anniversary of the infamous Tiananmen Square massacre, with no evidence of progress on China's human-rights record. Sadly, the Western world glorifies China's economic prosperity to the detriment of human rights. With some EU nations' plan to lift the China arms ban and China's recent passage of the anti-secession law, a Chinese invasion of peace-loving Taiwan is imminent. Unless China moves toward a free and open society, no peace in the region is anticipated.
