Do the review before

Re ``Colleges waste millions'' (March 25):

The primary problem is not, as you state in the first sentence of the article, that endless review of design plans is wasting money. The problem is that the Los Angeles Community College District The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is the community college district serving Los Angeles, California and some of its neighboring cities. In addition to typical college aged students, the LACCD also serves adults of all ages.  board committed to building agreements with contractors (as well as second and third parties) then decided to bring in the ``community oversight'' as an afterthought.

More communication is needed between the trustees and the community, not less. The school bond construction contracts should have faced community review before they were implemented.

Without a whimper

Re ``Health audit raises pulse'' (March 30):

My pulse was raised reading that the L.A. County government has seen fit to provide illegal aliens with free nonemergency care. Being self-employed, middle-age, no history of medical problems, the premium for myself and my wife is $660 per month for a HMO HMO health maintenance organization.

HMO
n.
A corporation that is financed by insurance premiums and has member physicians and professional staff who provide curative and preventive medicine within certain financial,
 plan.

That this city government has the nerve to provide nonemergency medical treatment to people here illegally without so much as a whimper of protest from the public is a sign that we have given up. We have turned over control to the current socialists that fill the county and state offices, and we now have the government we deserve.

Johnnie Cochran Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr.[1] (October 2, 1937 – March 29, 2005) was an African American lawyer best known for his role in the legal defense during the O. J. Simpson murder case.

Re ``Former O.J. Simpson lawyer dead at 67'' (March 30):

I fervently pray that when Johnnie Cochran crossed over into eternity, he was met by Nicole Brown Simpson Nicole Brown Simpson (May 19, 1959 – June 12, 1994) was the wife of American football player O.J. Simpson. Found murdered at her home in Los Angeles, California, along with her friend Ronald Goldman, her death led to one of the most controversial and widely-discussed criminal  and Ron Goldman, who shared with him graphic detail of every excruciating second of their last minutes on Earth.

Now Cochran knows who really murdered Nicole and Ron and he gets to carry that knowledge with him for all time. I wonder if, when faced with his final judgment, Cochran will deny all wrongdoing wrong·do·er

Next injunction

Re ``Hahn wants single L.A. gang injunction'' (March 29):

Taking gangs off our city streets is certainly a step in the right direction. Now, if we can only get an injunction to take politicians out of our city government.

Rewarding incompetence

Re ``Report rips spy agencies on Iraq'' (March 29):

What's new? Wouldn't it be fun (and rewarding) to work for a governmental agency that rewards incompetence or worse, but which follows the party line? No one party is responsible for this condition.

Model-plane rescue

Re ``Wasn't even a kitten'' (Your Opinions, March 29):

William Child is complaining about the fire department deploying a hook and ladder Hook and ladder can refer to:
  • hook and ladder, a type of fire apparatus
  • hook and ladder, or hook and lateral, a type of novelty play used in American football
to rescue a model airplane, which he and others feel is a waste of taxpayers' money.

But let's look at it from another point of view. For me, it gives these men a chance to go out and get some in-service hours, perhaps trying out some new equipment or technique. Sometimes things are not what they appear to be. My hat's off to these firefighters.

The men we need

William Child should understand that our firemen constantly train and test their equipment. Removing a model airplane from a tree is more than a good neighbor policy Good Neighbor Policy

During the Northridge Earthquake, our local firemen used their fire hoses to rappel 50 feet down a steep hill to rescue a man and a woman from a collapsed house. Firemen who can remove a model airplane from a tree for a child are the men we need during a real emergency.

Political theater

Re ``Isn't it grand politicians know it all'' (Their Opinions, March 23):

The entire mess that surrounds the Terri Schiavo debacle illustrates what happens when citizens cease to care that their country is led by a one-party government that ignores decades-old political fundraising laws, laughs in the face of the concept of a balance of power, turns dysfunctional familial relationships into political theater and legislates from the perspective of the golden rule - he with the most gold, rules.

Using Schiavo

Re ``Isn't it grand politicians know it all'' (Their Opinions, March 23):

It is no small wonder that the Republican machine would use the life of Terri Schiavo to further its own ends. A maneuver like this is indeed the modus operandi [Latin, Method of working.] A term used by law enforcement authorities to describe the particular manner in which a crime is committed.

The term modus operandi is most commonly used in criminal cases. It is sometimes referred to by its initials, M.O.
of the Republican Party: Use whatever you can to get what you want, regardless of the deep truths behind it all.

Here we have a monumental Republican movement to intercept the judicial process in order to loudly grandstand the sacredness of life. Meanwhile in Iraq ....

On being humane

I have a 6-year-old Staffordshire terrier, which, of course, is really a pit bull in the witness-protection program. He hurt his hindquarters jumping on our bed and, with him being about 36 years old in dog years, I thought it would be only humane to put him down. But instead of taking him to the vet and having him put to sleep, I decided to deprive him of food and water until he dies.

The rest of my family is against this, but he's my dog and I can do whatever I want to do. After all, he was in a semivegetative state before he hurt himself and couldn't tell me what he wanted, either food or water. I prayed to God (dog spelled backward) about this and just 'feel' it is the right thing to do. What do you think I should do?

from all sides on the Terri Schiavo case are pushed aside, how can a nation that is known for protecting the most unprotected among us legally withhold the basic needs for life from someone so vulnerable? Someone who committed no crime. Someone who is unable to defend herself in either word nor deed.

How can the hearsay hearsay: see evidence.  of an adulterous husband with such a clear conflict of interest lead to a state-sanctioned execution by starvation? While we protect the rights of the convicted murderer, the whales, frogs and sand fleas (to say nothing of the pristine Alaskan wilderness), we abandon the helpless human being. And people wonder why values have become a national issue.
