What would I do?

Whatever your position on the Terri Schiavo Theresa Marie "Terri" Schiavo (December 3, 1963 – March 31, 2005), from St. Petersburg, Florida, United States was a woman who suffered brain damage and became dependent on a feeding tube.  tragedy, it should act as a catalyst for discussion of this topic. Considering the time of year, I shall add a fifth question to the four traditional questions at my Passover Seder The Passover Seder (Hebrew: סֵדֶר, seðɛɾ, "order", "arrangement") is a Jewish ritual feast held on the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover (the 15th day of Hebrew month of Nisan).  table this year:

What would I want my family to do if I were in Terri's dilemma?

Get out

Re ``Bush signs Schiavo bill'' (March 21):

Get out of where you do not belong. This is what I say to Congress. This Florida case has been through the courts, and you have no right to redirect the laws in the middle of some case that your special interests want you to get into. You have no idea what has gone on in this case. It is ridiculous that you and the president are grandstanding on this issue because your ``right-to-life'' backers force you to do it. Leave me and my living will alone!

Shame on America

We jail people who starve their animals to death. Animals can't speak nor care for themselves, yet we fight for their rights. We punish those who are cruel to animals. Terri Schiavo's husband, Michael, has a fiancee and children that he has fathered by her. He will not grant a divorce to Terri. He will not grant her parents custody of her. She has not been allowed to leave her room in years. She is not on life support.

Shame on America. We wouldn't do this to a dog.

Sad day

Saturday was a sad day for all Americans. If Congress can involve itself in the Terri Schiavo situation, it can insert itself into every part of our personal lives. That was not the intention of our forefathers forefathers nplantepasados mpl

Read carefully

Re ``Arnold to kill death benefits for widows?'' (March 15):

The official title and summary of the public pension ballot initiative Gov. Schwarzenegger and Assemblyman Richman support reads:

``Eliminates death, disability benefits for such (public) employees.''

So how can they deny that their initiative would eliminate death and disability protection for police and firefighters, among others?

The lesson to be learned: Read all ballot initiative petitions closely before you sign. And don't sign the pension initiative.

Fun overkill overkill Vox populi An excess of anything

Re ``A shot in the dark'' (March 18):

The Daily News describes Phil Perrier as a ``humor writer.'' I want to suggest a ``hilarious humor writer.'' I belly-laughed throughout his last piece. However, I think he implied Robert Blake's guilt with a bit too much fun overkill. I buy the jurors' acquittal verdict.

City of Angels cuts

Re ``City of Angels school program faces district cuts'' (March 15):

So here we are again facing yet more budget cuts in the education of our kids. Once again programs established to help students are facing serious cutbacks and complete elimination (City of Angels). And I sit here wondering where is the outrage? Where are the questions to our local and state officials to get it together and stop picking away at the education of our kids?

As a parent with an elementary-school child enrolled at City of Angels I will seek alternative home-schooled programs outside of the LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA) . My child's excellent test scores won't be available to boost any more of your schools. LAUSD, you have failed me one too many times.

Pope still leads

Re ``Pope's ability'' (Your Opinions, March 17):

No doubt our society prefers not to see the Holy Father now that he has lost his athletic physique. This society prefers to put the old and infirm INFIRM. Weak, feeble.

into rest homes so that we don't have to witness their physical suffering. It makes us uncomfortable. However, in doing so, we cheat ourselves from their wisdom and experience.

The Holy Father still leads us all in wisdom, prayer and spirituality. Moreover, he is a living example of the value of human life from conception until natural death. He is proof that there is dignity and worth even in illness and pain - proponents of euthanasia do not want us to see this proof.

Life in L.A.

What at one time was a nice place to live has slowly turned into a Third World nation. Nobody seems to be employed and in turn are up at all hours of the night. There is never any parking because each apartment has well over the amount of people that should be living there. It is dirty. People are rude and have no respect for anyone.

Why venture anywhere to see what the city is like when you can see what it's like right in your back yard.

Assisted-suicide bill

The Democrats/liberals have been accused of not proposing alternatives to the failing Social Security system. Now they have come up with a plan: kill the frail and ailing. Convince them to end their lives as swiftly as possible through suicide. Thus Social Security can remain solvent under its present system and greedy heirs can cash in on their inheritance.

``Swift'' is the operative word since the social satirist Jonathan Swift proposed a somewhat related modest proposal many years ago.

DeLay's ethics

History will note

Years from now, I believe George W. Bush is going to go down in history as the man who brought America, the leading country in the world, down to a third-class nation. He inherited a nation where the previous president left him with a strong economy and was paying off the national debt. Bush changed all that.

Now the rich are getting richer and poor are getting poorer and our national debt is getting out of control. Because of his policies, the dollar is worth less and prices are skyrocketing. Let's stop blaming this on 9-11. Put the blame where it belongs, right on George W. Bush.

Perot's lesson

The budget deficit is out of control. Have we already forgotten the math lesson Ross Perot H. Ross Perot (born June 27, 1930) is an American businessman from Texas, who is best known for seeking the office of President of the United States in 1992 and 1996. Perot founded Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in 1962 and later sold the company to General Motors and founded Perot  gave the nation? We need to be focused on solutions that are good for all Americans, not just those who can afford to buy whatever they need, from health care to good educations for their children.

Republicans are pushing through this budget before critics and media have had the chance to engage in public debate. Please stop this train before it leaves the station, and most Americans behind.
