PUBLIC FORUM VIOLENCE AND HATE.

Re ``Basket cases'' (Nov. 21):

The player suspensions after Friday night's basket-brawl are a good start, but why let the team owners, the fans and the city of Detroit off the hook? The atmosphere of violence and hate in sports has not only been allowed to continue, it has been encouraged.

Players are advertised as ``bad boys'' and ``killers,'' and when they act it out, the crowd cheers for blood. The league should take a strong stand and suspend all games in Detroit for the rest of the year. There is no excuse for the players' reaction to the crowd, but there is also no excuse for the crowd.

Re `` A sad day for sports, fans'' (Nov. 21):

Does it matter who started the fight at the Pistons-Indiana basketball game? Did Terrell Owens Terrell Eldorado Owens (born December 7, 1973), is an American football wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. Popularly known by his initials, T.O., Owens has established himself as one of the League's most productive and outspoken players. , Nicolette Sheridan or ABC ABC

Folks, I'm just scratching the surface here, but I for one am proud to stand up and say, ``Yeah, I'm part of that moral Christian conservative right.''

Spilled beer

Re ``A sad day for sports, fans'' (Nov. 21):

Yes, it was more than a sad day for sports. Everyone involved should be ashamed. However, they say don't cry over spilled milk, so why punch over spilled beer? Fighting is not the answer for any situation; it is sad that careers had to be ruined in order for some to learn that.

Thugs on the floor

Re ``A sad day for sports, fans'' (Nov. 21):

It is now officially called ``basket-brawl.'' Smart, innocent bystanders will be in contact with lawyers and numbers like millions will precede dollars in their demands. If it bankrupts the team, so what? Who cares? The thugs on the floor sure don't give a hoot Verb 1. give a hoot - show no concern or interest; always used in the negative; "I don't give a hoot"; "She doesn't give a damn about her job"

All have laundry

Re ``L.A.'s dirty P.R. laundry aired for all to see'' (Nov. 20):

Let me get this straight. Laura Chick not only took campaign money from Fleishman-Hillard but shouldn't she, as our city controller, have been questioning the bills before she forked See forked version.

Re ``Death by doctor a lethal Rx'' (Viewpoint, Nov. 21):

It appears to me that the columnists who rant against doctor-assisted suicide (e.g. Chris Weinkopf in Sunday's Viewpoint) are themselves not suffering from a terminal illness. This is much like men deciding for women how they may or may not manage their pregnancies. Why not let the terminally ill Terminally Ill

I'm just saying

I read Millie Derose's recent letter, in which she asks what does O.J. have to do with Scott Peterson
For the staff writer for the Christian Science Monitor, see Scott Peterson (writer).

Scott Lee Peterson (born 24 October, 1972) is a former fertilizer salesman convicted of the murder of his wife Laci and unborn son Conner Peterson.
. I believe what Myrna Bixler and I were saying is that O.J. got away with murder, and we did not want to see Scott Peterson get away with it as well. So in short, Millie, when people discuss someone getting away with murder, O.J. is the first person that comes to mind.

From the flag monitor

Re ``Veterans Day'' by Richard J. Warren:

I am the flag monitor for the Erwin Street Mall in Van Nuys, which is city property. Other than fire stations and police stations, no other building flies their flags 24/7. The flags were half staff on Veterans Day to honor a fallen police officer.

I have the authority to fly the flags at half staff to honor fallen police officers, sheriff's deputies and firefighters. I work for the Department of Defense and we have lost many women and men in our current conflict. Let's respect those who are fighting for our freedom.

A modest compromise

Re ``Peterson case reflects the devaluation devaluation, decreasing the value of one nation's currency relative to gold or the currencies of other nations. It is usually undertaken as a means of correcting a deficit in the balance of payments.  of life'' (Their Opinions, Nov. 19):

Unfortunately, with the mind-sets we seem to have in the ACLU ACLU: see American Civil Liberties Union.  and the California Legislature, I don't see much hope for restoring the dignity of life (whether it's in the womb or not). Perhaps I have a compromise.

Since some of these ``guardians'' of our welfare don't think life exists until the baby is born, perhaps we could extend the period of allowable abortions to some time after a child is born (say 10 minutes, an hour or, of course, to some loosely defined longer period for special circumstances special circumstances n. in criminal cases, particularly homicides, actions of the accused or the situation under which the crime was committed for which state statutes allow or require imposition of a more severe punishment. ) before murdering the baby. After all, doesn't the convenience of the ``mother'' demand this ``right?''

Take safety seriously

Re ``All for $11 billion ...'' (Editorial, Nov. 21):

I agree with Walter Moore in that he believes the money that Mayor Hahn is trying to spend on LAX is a large amount considering the minute amount of expansion it is going to have. He also says that there are going to be limited security features added to the airport. What do we need a high-tech and beautiful airport for if we cannot feel safe in it? I believe that safety should be taken a bit more seriously than looks.

The pattern emerges

Re: ``800 billion raise for borrowing cap'' (Nov. 19):

Plenty of examples this week of Republicans breaking the rules and then rewriting them to avoid punishment: Instead of living within a responsible budget, King George King George has referred to many kings throughout history. When used, by Americans, without further reference it most often means George III of the United Kingdom, against whom the Whigs of the American Revolution rebelled.  brings us to ``imminent default,'' and then blithely asks his fundamentalist lackeys in Congress to burden our children with another $800 billion in borrowing debt.

With former exterminator and Republican Congressman Tom DeLay expected to be indicted INDICTED, practice. When a man is accused by a bill of indictment preferred by a grand jury, he is said to be indicted.  for all kinds of dirty maneuvering, his committee simply changes the rule that would remove him. Grim future

Re ``Rice to replace Powell'' (Nov. 18):

Every GI knows that ``brown-nosers'' at headquarters get promoted; combat soldiers get killed. Condoleezza Rice gets promoted; Colin Powell gets fired. The hawks and vultures are now in total control of our federal government. Almost the whole world hates us. What a grim future my grandchildren face.
