PUBLIC FORUM REMEMBERING REAGAN.Back in February 1991, during the Gulf War, and two days after his 80th birthday, former President Reagan was nice enough to take time out from his busy schedule and meet with my parents at his office in Century City. My parents used to be big antique collectors, and my mom found a shirt that he wore in one of his movies. My mom wrote a letter to his office, and the former president wanted to see the shirt, so he invited my parents to his office. My parents have always spoken very fondly of their meeting with him. They said he was extremely nice and very friendly, and meeting President Reagan was something they'll never forget and always cherish for the rest of their lives. He may be gone now, but all of the great things he did for this country will never be forgotten. - Michael Lipofsky Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. Nostalgic for Reagan I'm a ``loony'' liberal, and I'd trade two president Bushes to have President Reagan back. He was a Republican, but was willing to take a second look at his policies if they proved to be detrimental to the general population's welfare. - Jennifer Rabuchin Burbank Reagan's legacy The Great Communicator, a former Democrat, liberated us from New Deal regulations in his 1964 ``A Time for Choosing'' speech: ``This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American revolution American Revolution, 1775–83, struggle by which the Thirteen Colonies on the Atlantic seaboard of North America won independence from Great Britain and became the United States. It is also called the American War of Independence. and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.'' He was a great leader and a great communicator - decency and optimism were key components of his personality. Most of all, he loved and believed in America and the principles which have made her great. Praise him for his performance, but give credit to the script writers and directors behind the scenes. Don't make the man you would give an Oscar for his portrayal of president a saint. He wasn't. And while you're at it, review his role as governor of California The Governor of California is the highest executive authority in the state government, whose responsibilities include making yearly "State of the State" addresses to the California State Legislature, submitting the budget, and ensuring that state laws are enforced. , the real behind-the-scenes legacy. - Marilyn Sims Reseda Bitter accusations Re ``Faustian bargain'' (Your Opinions, June 8): I knew Ronald Reagan. I directed his commercials for governor and I found him to be the most honest, astute, caring man I had ever met and it really annoys me to read the diatribe di·a·tribe n. A bitter, abusive denunciation. [Latin diatriba, learned discourse, from Greek diatrib of John Wisdom Dancer's mostly false accusations about Reagan on the very day this beloved president was lying in repose Lying in repose is when the remains of a deceased person, often one of some stature, are available for viewing by the public. This is different from "lying in state;" the latter term refers to a formal honor, generally in the principal government building of a country and in Simi Valley. The timing showed real class. A few months back, this paper printed a story about a very respected group of legal historians that voted Reagan the best president of the 20th century with Harry Truman second. I found just about all of Dancer's bitter accusations about Reagan to be grossly inaccurate. - Stephen Lord Stephen Lord (born 1 October 1972 in Manchester, England) is an English actor. He has appeared in many British televisions shows, including Heartbeat, The Bill and Sea of Souls. Sherman Oaks Betrayal Re ``Faustian bargain'' (June 8): John Wisdom Dancer berates President Reagan and accuses him of ``betraying artists in the film industry to the House Un-American Committee.'' I would suggest that it was the many communist sympathizers in Hollywood who betrayed this country for an evil ideology that is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions of people around the globe. - Shari Seaman Goodman Calabasas Redundant mini-districts Re ``Romer's uphill battle'' May 30-: To imply that the minidistrict design had a significant role in test score improvement over the last six years is simplistic sim·plism n. The tendency to oversimplify an issue or a problem by ignoring complexities or complications. [French simplisme, from simple, simple, from Old French; see simple and inaccurate. Scores began improving before mini D's existed. Improvements began in classrooms, when local school decision-making was initiated by the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. . Thousands of teachers and parents volunteered to do more work in order to assess, and address, local stakeholder's needs. The LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA) provided professional development, time to collaborate and funding for effective classroom resources. Teachers were, and continue to be, at the front of all change. Originally in favor of the mini-district plan, I now see they are costly errand boys for decisions made elsewhere. Their role is invisible, redundant, expensive, superfluous. They need to go. - Mary Whiteley Glendale A lousy week It's been a lousy week. Edelman. has turned coward and wants us to walk a mile in the other guys' shoes - a great cliche but how the heck does that equate to changing the county's seal to satisfy a select few? Let's do it to the three county supervisors who refused to reconsider their vote on the county seal and are too condescending to submit it to a vote by the very people who put them in office and pay the bills. We had always thought that you represented us, the citizens of Los Angeles County. Boy, were we wrong. - Marion Flatt Sunland Good job, guys While there are so many complaints about the city all around us, I would like to say thank you for the fine service I recently received. On Sunday at 6 p.m., the city tree on our property lost a large branch. The neighbors watched as it hit the roof of our house. I called 311 and they had to call their tree trimmers from their homes to come help us. Luckily, there was no damage to our property, but it became a safety issue. They arrived at 11 p.m. and removed the branch without damaging our house or garden. Monday, a crew arrived and removed the remainder of the rotted tree and replaced it with a brand new one. The crew was extremely polite and helpful and considered our property with great care through it all. - Sandy Wynn Van Nuys Dedicated teachers Re ``Union made'' (Editorial, June 2): In regards to your usual teacher-bashing and union-bashing editorial - just how do you think Romer got those $10 billion bond issues passed? United Teachers Los Angeles contributed funds and manpower to help the district win those fights. And how did the test scores rise all over the city? Because dedicated teachers made the extra effort in their overcrowded o·ver·crowd v. o·ver·crowd·ed, o·ver·crowd·ing, o·ver·crowds v.tr.
