PUBLIC FORUM PROTECT YOUR LAND.

Re ``Finally getting smart'' (Public Forum, March 19):

Why do you begrudge be·grudge
tr.v. be·grudged, be·grudg·ing, be·grudg·es
1. To envy the possession or enjoyment of: She begrudged him his youth. See Synonyms at envy.

2.
the $3 billion in aid given to Israel? You don't mention the billions given to Egypt, Jordan, India, etc. What do they do for it?

Last September, Israel sent us immediately a team to help our security people secure planes, dams and nuclear facilities. Their intelligence has always advised ours of anything important - the only democratic country in the Middle East, working with the USA on many technological projects. As for the bombing of innocent teen-agers, citizens at a restaurant in their own land, that's terrorism, all right. Protect your land from inside your territory.

There will never be peace in the Middle East until the U.S. recognizes the legitimate rights of the Palestinians. Israel has used its own brand of terrorism against the Palestinians for the past 53-plus years. This has to be stopped. Terrorism of any kind is wrong.

Dealing with barking

Re ``Barking dogs'' (Public Forum, March 15):

Barking and roaming dogs make life miserable for thousands of residents of Los Angeles. I have successfully handled the problem twice in my neighborhood, but the Los Angeles Animal Control process could be made easier. You can start by having a polite conversation to let the dog owner know there is a problem. Many times they are completely unaware that their dog starts barking the minute they leave the house. The operative word here is ``polite.''

A written complaint to Animal Control will get the owner a warning and maintain your anonymity. It's not that hard to do, but the process could be easier and quicker. Most people don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
how to go about it. Once the dog owner understands they can lose their animal if the problem is not corrected, they do something about it.

Organized noise

I live in a third-floor apartment at the intersection of two busy streets from which I am assaulted, frequently, by the strains of what is euphemistically titled ``music,'' a type, which to my uneducated ear, totally lacks harmony and melody. The so-called ``music'' emanating from the open sun rooms of the ``wheels'' of the adolescent drivers goes on from 7 p.m. till the wee small hours of the morning on the average weekend.

They are entitled to the type of tunes they prefer; however, please, either keep the volume down or your sun roofs and windows closed as a service to the general public who are not appreciative of ``noise in the night'' - the overpowering sound of a bass viol and the pounding of a base drum, between which there is no orchestral sound to the accompanying thunder.

Missed the point

Unfortunately you completely missed the point of my efforts to combat the sale of drug paraphernalia drug paraphernalia Controlled paraphernalia Substance abuse As defined in a regulatory context, DP is a hypodermic syringe, needle, metal or plastic (snorting) tube, or other instrument or implement or combination adapted for the administration of controlled  near schools in your March 19 editorial ``Tobacco overkill overkill Vox populi An excess of anything .'' A ``head shop'' selling bongs, drug paraphernalia and pro-marijuana T-shirts just opened directly across the street from the front entrance to Fairfax High School Fairfax High School can refer to:
  • Fairfax High School (Fairfax, Missouri)
  • Fairfax High School (Fairfax, Virginia)
  • Fairfax High School (Los Angeles)
  • Fairfax High School (Oklahoma) in Fairfax, Oklahoma
  • Betty H.
. There is currently no law to prevent drug paraphernalia vendors from opening near schools.

No parent wants to see a head shop open near his or her child's school. As a parent and council member, I am going to make sure it doesn't happen again in Los Angeles. While the store claims that these materials are intended for use with tobacco, any 10th-grader knows that bongs are used primarily for marijuana. My measure is specifically intended to address the sale of drug paraphernalia, not cigarettes or cigars.

I hope that you will reconsider your position on this issue and support my efforts to ensure that our kids don't have to confront the peddling of items that enable the use of illegal drugs as they walk out the front door of our schools.

Figure it out

People know how to use a computer, manage to program a cell phone, figure out how to time the microwave oven. They know how to use all the modern conveniences available.

Why is it that these same people cannot find the device attached to the car steering column? It's called a turn signal. If you can't figure it out, check your car manual or ask your gas station attendant. I would appreciate knowing when and if you are turning, preferably before you get to your turn.

CO2 is essential

Re ``State should take lead in fighting global warming'' (Opinion, March 15):

When I was in high school biology class, I learned that carbon dioxide carbon dioxide, chemical compound, CO2, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is about one and one-half times as dense as air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure. , CO2, is essential to the process of photosynthesis in green plants. The carbon is absorbed to promote growth, and oxygen is released into the atmosphere. Oxygen and carbon are the building blocks of life on our Earth. Of course I attended Hazle Township High in Pennsylvania. Sad and alone

Your March 8 story about foster homes reminded me of an idea I've had for years. When my mother died, I was in second grade and thought I was the only ``half orphan'' in school.

I would have benefited had I been placed in a support group of peers who also felt sad and alone. An orphan-type facility could not only provide comfort and support for homeless children but also keep siblings together.
