PUBLIC FORUM PRIVILEGED CITIZENS.

After listening for many months about the situations of Robert Downey Jr. and Darryl Strawberry
Darryl Eugene Strawberry (born March 12, 1962) is a former baseball player who is well-known both for his play on the baseball field and for his controversial behavior off of it.
, I am compelled to write this letter. My son has been in and out of prison over the last 10 years because of his addiction to drugs. He has never been offered any kind of drug rehabilitation This article is about the process of rehabilitation for substance dependency. For other uses, see Rehab (disambiguation). For other kinds of rehabilitation, see Rehabilitation. For the American rap-rock group, see Rehab (band).  like Downey or Strawberry. He serves his time, comes out, and unfortunately goes right back to the drugs and ends up in prison again.

My main reason for this letter is to ask why only the rich and famous are given every opportunity to get their lives straightened out and the lowly private citizen gets completely passed over. I make no excuses for my son; I believe he should be punished for breaking the law. But is he any less deserving of some help because he is neither rich nor famous?

    The human factor

Re John Wilde's letter in Public Forum on May 17, ``Oh, the destruction:''

Wilde states that U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein Dianne Goldman Berman Feinstein (born June 22, 1933) is the senior U.S. Senator from California, having held office as a senator since 1992. She is a member of the Democratic Party.  is the ``perfect environmental wacko.'' Environmental concerns aside, there is a human cost which may arise from political machinations in Africa or declared war in the Middle East. As an American citizen, I do not endorse any loss of life for my right to drive to the corner store.

Bicycling has become my preferred mode of transportation. It is way more enjoyable than driving, way cheaper and provides the health benefits of exercise.

I don't blame President Bush for having such a cavalier attitude toward California's energy crisis. I blame Vice President Dick Cheney for not having taught the president that congressional elections are held every two years.

    `Super liberals' live

Re ``Calling All Liberals'' (Public Forum, May 16):

Letter writer Edmond Henry has asked (with predictable conservative cynicism) where the superliberals have disappeared to. We have disappeared? Only in his dreams. We ``superliberals'' (whatever that means) wouldn't miss the legacy being created by George W. Bush for the world.

Just why an 8-year-old child collecting money for a worthwhile cause would be a threat, while adults are allowed to beg at the Woodland Hills Post Office, is beyond me. Cheaper gas

Regarding the $2-plus gasoline prices in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, I was surprised to find prices lower this past weekend in Coalinga ($1.919 unleaded), Hollister ($1.939) and Kettleman City ($1.879). A person's soul

I have now heard it all.

In a May 18 Public Forum letter titled ``A different viewpoint,'' the writer compared a fetus to an amoeba amoeba: see ameba.
    amoeba

Well, for that poor, ill-informed writer I would offer this. What differentiates a parasite from a person is a thing called a soul. Fight discrimination

I believe church leaders should not involve themselves in the Valley secession issue but instead devote their time to addressing a more important issue in our society - discrimination. I think they need to emphasize to their respective members, especially among the youths, the evil effects when people discriminate against other people because of race, religion, age, social status and other reasons.

I hope church leaders and their active members will launch programs and activities to combat all sorts of discrimination practices and enhance further harmonious relationships among people of different origins and cultures residing in the county. Church leaders can do a lot in shaping people's attitudes and values and thus can help the government on this issue.

    What about moms?

I was quite surprised to find so little coverage of this Mother's Day Million Mom March The Million Mom March had its roots in August 1999, when Donna Dees-Thomases, a New Jersey mom with a public relations background and political connections, was horrified that a gunman shot at children in Granada Hills, California.  rally in Sacramento, especially since there is an active chapter that meets at the North Valley Jewish Community Center.

Approximately 20 of our members traveled to Sacramento, some with their families, to participate in the activities. Most returned to the Capitol building Monday to meet with legislators and present them with petitions supporting Sen. Jack Scott's gun safety bill, SB 52. We were well-received and returned home energized to continue working for gun safety in our communities.

going to provide security on all of its buses? Every bus I take has a sign warning that the person next to you may be an undercover officer.

    This is a flat-out lie.

Recently, when I was going from Glendale to Sylmar I was in my usual seat at the back of the bus. The man in the front of the bus (the only other passenger) kept looking at me. When he got off he offered me $100 to go to my house and explained what in very graphic sexual detail.

As a strong Christian, I was deeply offended and quoted the Bible (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Matthew 12:28). He stood at the back door for a couple of minutes telling me I had better get a husband or else, then threatened me using more graphic, explicit detail; yelling so the male driver could hear.

I talked about how sick he was to the driver, who could not have cared less.

As a result I am now afraid to utilize the only transportation I can afford.
