Unified School Board last week to maintain the current level of employee health benefits is noteworthy for several reasons. The decision to hold the line on medical care - widely considered one of the most attractive reasons to work for LAUSD - puts the focus back on recruiting and retaining the qualified faculty and staff our students deserve. The board also took a bold step toward stabilizing the district by rescinding previously approved furloughs. The new majority sent a clear signal to employees, parents and the public that they want to shift directions in labor relations from confrontation to cooperation. This is a good first step.
