PUBLIC FORUM MORE SECURITY AT TAFT.

Re ``3 Taft students shot'' (Sept. 10):

This is a wake-up call that security is needed at the bus stop - either through MTA (1) (Message Transfer Agent or Mail Transfer Agent) The store and forward part of a messaging system. See messaging system.

I remember so well because I attended a candlelight call for peace outside of Taft. Ironically, the intended individual along with the shooters escaped without injury. My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

Business in California

Re ``Study says SB 2 could cost employers $5.7 billion'' (Sept. 10):

We are amazed that our state legislature A state legislature may refer to a legislative branch or body of a political subdivision in a federal system.

The following legislatures exist in the following political subdivisions:

We have loved living in California for the past 25 years, but we too are looking elsewhere, and for one reason only: It is becoming impossible to be a small-business person in this state. To our legislators, money is always ``there.'' It comes from ``the budget.'' If more of our legislators had ever spent five minutes not on the public payroll (inhaling tax money and exhaling ex·hale

Doesn't seem right

Re ``9-11 families have the right to sue over deaths'' (Sept. 10):

Near the second anniversary of our nation's great tragedy, I listened to radio commentary discussing the compensation awarded the victims' families, and something didn't seem right. Are class-action law suits against Boeing, the New York New York, state, United States

Of course, it will make some law firms very rich. None of us knew enough on that day to have changed the events or it wouldn't have happened. I felt as bad as the rest of America and donated to the relief fund. This was an act of war - why can't we learn from it, do what is humanly possible to prevent another similar tragedy, help those that need help, and move on with life?

Self-inflicted

Gray Davis shot himself in the foot with the licenses for illegal immigrants issue. If he wins there will be voter fraud charges filed. A check with Department of Motor Vehicles In the United States of America, Department of Motor Vehicles (or DMV) is a commonly used name of the government agency of a U.S. state which administers the registration of automobiles (e.g., by issuing license plates), and/or the licensing of drivers (e.g.  of licenses issued after Sept. 1 will be compared with the voter registration records as suspect.

Odds are

I believe the chances of Gov. Gray Davis remaining in office after Oct. 7 are as slim as Mexico City granting its illegal immigrants the opportunity to obtain driving licenses.

Payback time

I would like to thank everyone who voted Gray Davis into office. I just received my annual registration notice for a 7-year-old, pollution-free motorcycle with a 300 percent increase in fees. I'll show my disgust on Oct. 7.

Casino Cruz

A vote for Cruz Bustamante is a vote for change. That's right, rich Hollywood types wanting to develop precious coastal lands will no longer be able to buy themselves permission as under Gray Davis. Instead it will be the tribal casinos that will have their way in Sacramento. Casino Cruz will sell permits to the highest bidder HIGHEST BIDDER, contracts. School board vote

The 6-1 vote by the L.A. Unified School Board last week to maintain the current level of employee health benefits is noteworthy for several reasons. The decision to hold the line on medical care - widely considered one of the most attractive reasons to work for LAUSD - puts the focus back on recruiting and retaining the qualified faculty and staff our students deserve.

The board also took a bold step toward stabilizing the district by rescinding previously approved furloughs. The new majority sent a clear signal to employees, parents and the public that they want to shift directions in labor relations from confrontation to cooperation.

This is a good first step. Now the LAUSD administration and UTLA UTLA United Teachers of Los Angeles (California)  must negotiate an entire contract, including professional development and other non-monetary issues, as well as identify alternate sources of revenue.

Since UTLA has a long history of fighting school district administrative fat, including a statewide initiative we placed on the ballot, I agree with the Daily News that Superintendent Roy Romer must find other areas in the bloated $12.5 billion budget to cut, especially nonclassroom expenses. The board should continue resisting efforts to ``skim'' $40 million annually from the general fund to cover cost overruns on construction projects that should be paid with school bonds.

Needs to be defensive

``Job losses put Bush on defensive'' (Sept. 5) sums up exactly what's wrong with the current administration. It's defensive about having turned the largest surplus in history into the largest debt in history. Rebuild America, not Iraq

Let's see, we are sending billions of dollars to rebuild Iraq. Who is going to help us take care of the United States of America UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The name of this country. The United States, now thirty-one in number, are Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, ? There are people here who are also needy and we are not spending the money to fix up our cities and towns. The illegal immigrants are eating up the tax money that we older Americans paid in. Require them to commit to become legal. So many of them are excellent workers, have them commit and earn the just rewards.

Please do not reduce Medicare drug benefits to pay for rebuilding another country. I was laid off and now must depend on less than the equivalent of minimum wage on Social Security and a meager mea·ger also mea·gre
