PUBLIC FORUM LIGHTEN UP.With the presidential election finally behind us, I'd like to propose a nonpartisan day of unity. I'm not necessarily suggesting a national group-hug, but rather an opportunity to lighten up and get along after such an unpleasant campaign. A great way to start this day would be to peel the political bumper stickers off your car, pull the sign off your lawn and take the anti-whoever cartoons down from the office bulletin board. It no longer matters who you were for or against. It's over. Let's move on and be civil. Publicly expressing anger and hatred may be our right as Americans, but it's an unpleasant way to live and unhealthy for our country. - John Funk Hollywood Hills The Hollywood Hills, an unofficial designation of part of the City of Los Angeles, California, are part of the eastern section of the low transverse range of the Santa Monica Mountains, which extends from the Los Feliz District and Hollywood, on the south side of the Valley, to Our way It is truly in praise of our way that so many millions of people can disagree so vehemently and still accept the outcome of an election without a bloodbath blood·bath also blood bath n. You came and plastered the city with all your political signs. So if you can stop celebrating or crying, come take down your garbage. - Joe Pinoy Lozano Mission Hills Stop gloating The gloaters were out in full force today (Your Opinions, Nov. 3) in a biased un-American manner, sticking it to the unsuccessful voters. Shame on you! I voted for Kerry but I certainly wish our re-elected president well in dealing with the huge problems facing him. His handling of Iran and Korea in the next few years is of great importance to me. My life could depend on it, as well as the lives of the gloaters. - Hal Rattner Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, Degree of damage I can appreciate the effort by people who are trying to put a positive outlook on the re-election of George Bush, but the degree of damage this administration can do to our country and others is enormous. I am afraid that what we have seen so far is a tiny fraction of what awaits us. The fact is that bad does sometime happen, pushes good away and defeats it. - Sevak Khodaverdian Sherman Oaks Onus on Republicans The election results show a highly divided America. The more interesting issue is whether the president packs the Supreme Court with ultraconservatives likely to change the course of society, creating even more polarization in our country. As to what's next, the heat will be turned up in an attempt to amend the Constitution to allow certain foreign-born citizens to run for president. I don't think this is what Jefferson, Adams and others had in mind. - Leigh Datzker Woodland Hills Given the mandate In your editorials, and other discussions, on the next four years of the Bush administration, there are calls for the administration to move its positions in order to build national unity. This is unrealistic. Given the mandate the president received from the people, the onus has to be on the progressives to compromise and accept the will of the people by moving their agenda to the right in the name of national unity. At some point in the future, the time of the progressives may arrive. Until the American people An American people may be:

Mainstream America Now that President Bush has won re-election, Democrats have been quick to demand that Bush must now start to govern toward the middle. Let's look back at the results of the election - Republicans picked up four seats in the Senate and picked up additional seats in the House; the Senate minority leader, Tom Daschle, lost; Bush won 30 or 31 states; and exit polls showed that moral values was one of the main reasons that influenced voters choices. It seems that these politicians and those in the media haven't learned from the election and are in denial in denial Psychiatry To be in a state of denying the existence or effects of an ego defense mechanism.
