PUBLIC FORUM LIBERAL ATTACK.

Re ``Star-studded coalition urges Bush not to start war on Iraq'' (News Lite, Dec. 11):

This is clearly a liberal attack on Bush. I'd bet the farm that if Saddam has chemical, biological or nuclear weapons and eventually uses them, these Hollywood liberals will be among the first to attack the president for not doing anything about it. Moral standing

Re ``Star-studded coalition urges Bush not to start war on Iraq'' (News Lite, Dec. 11):

I find it ironic that in Hollywood's letter to the president concerning a war with Iraq, the signers said ``a war would undermine our moral standing in the world.'' They should know about the undermining of moral standings.

UFOs and grassy knolls

Many contributors to ``Your Opinions'' seem to be consumed with fear of what havoc ``Caesar Augustus Bush'' might wreak in his mad quest of world empire. Concerns are expressed that all rights gained by man since knuckles left the ground will be forfeit. Others feel that the Constitution's defenestration is as close as an open window. For brevity their list of chimeras could be concluded with, ``And God only knows what else.''

The untroubled mind would most likely wave off these concerns with a dismissive pooh-pooh. However, this would be most cavalier and totally lacking in compassion. A belief in black helicopters, UFOs and grassy knolls will never go away, and years from now people will still be searching under the bed for the boogeyman whole stole their vote in Florida. We must be patient, loving and understanding.

Toppling one man

Those Americans who either don't realize or don't care that the removal of Saddam Hussein - one man - from power is likely, by one British estimate, to result in the deaths of up to 500,000 Iraqi noncombatants, as well as tens of thousand of combatants on both sides, are not being patriotic. Too few babies

Re ``Save the golf course'' (Your Opinions, Dec. 6):

Unfortunately, Mark Van Horne is totally wrong. Estimates from European Census bureaus are that Russia and Italy will cease to exist within 50 years, because their populations are collapsing. We have an enormous problem as the ``Western World'' slowly disintegrates. The U.S. is the exception. Our population will grow from 285 million this year to about 360 million, thanks to immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important. . Europe faces the opposite scenario.

The Developing World is going through a similar process. Many countries aren't having enough children to sustain them as nations. Go to the Web site for the U.N. Even they are alarmed. The pope himself last week preached on the importance of Italians needing to have more children.

Has anyone considered moving the school to a safer, more suitable area using materials salvageable? Until it's moved, the building stands as an irritation to all of L.A.

Does Chief William Bratton believe that the news media are the ones that encourage nitwits to run from police? If he needs a scapegoat, he should look to car ads on TV that talk about speed over safety. He's right about one thing: If they gave longer prison sentences, it might help.

Working, not begging

Re ``Illegal vendors'' (Your Opinions, Dec. 4):

If it bothers you so much that the City Council members don't do anything about the illegal vendors, there is something you can do - don't buy their food. Yes. They are just trying to make a living, and I support that. They are working hard.

There are a lot of white and black people that are U.S. citizens who are begging for money at the freeway exits, when there is an illegal immigrant illegal immigrant n. an alien (non-citizen) who has entered the United States without government permission or stayed beyond the termination date of a visa. Sad commentary

Have you noticed on most of our city buses there ia a U.S. flag decal over the passenger door? Have you also noticed that the flag is displayed backward? The blue field of stars should be in the upper left hand corner. Isn't my fault

This morning's paper (Dec. 6) says homicides are up 16 percent in California. Didn't I hear Gray Davis say, during the campaign, that he lowered the crime rate? On another page it says ``Educators, law enforcers, others fear $10 billion in cuts.''

How about cutting his own salary? Don't blame me, I didn't vote for him.

Loose dogs

It was thoughtful of the Yateses to thank all the people who had been of help and comfort to them when their two dogs were injured (and later died?) when they were hit by a motor vehicle (Your Opinions, Dec. 5). The family also expressed its ``thanks for nothing'' to the ``moron mo·ron

so lacking in control of his car.''

I'd like to persuade the Yateses to rewrite that part of their letter. Those two sentences should have said: ``Our regrets to the motorists who tried to avoid a collision when suddenly our two large dogs ran into the path of your vehicle. Evidence shows that your evasive action caused your vehicle to jump a curb and nearly get stuck in the foliage. As the owners of our two pets, we know that we are responsible for their actions. Although we believed that those dogs were secure in a locked yard, we obviously were wrong.''

Antigun zealots Zealots (zĕl`əts), Jewish faction traced back to the revolt of the Maccabees (2d cent. B.C.). The name was first recorded by the Jewish historian Josephus as a designation for the Jewish resistance fighters of the war of A.D. 66–73.

Los Angeles has the distinction of having the most murders and other crimes in the United States. The city of Oakland follows close behind. The two cities are administered by liberal antigun zealots. In other local cities that have passed strict gun control laws the criminals run rampant killing, robbing, selling drugs and terrorizing citizens.
