PUBLIC FORUM IT MIGHT BE FEAR.After reading the latest round of Bush-bashing letters (Your Opinion, Feb. 11), I've come to the following conclusion: Liberals are prone to attribute only the most sinister of motives to the Bush administration, while they, the enlightened elites, are the only ones who are for peace. Those who support the president are, or course, all evil, mean-spirited warmongers. Is this attitude evidence of a left-wing sociopolitical so·ci·o·po·li·ti·cal adj. Involving both social and political factors. sociopolitical Adjective of or involving political and social factors bigotry or merely arrogance? Maybe it's something else - fear. I think they are afraid that success for President Bush - and America - will be a setback for the left. They certainly seem to be doing everything possible to undermine the president's efforts. - Alex Landi North Hills Near panic After a Sunday of surfing among the talk and interview shows, I'm hearing, not only from No. 1, but from Rummy rummy, card game played by two to six players with a standard deck. This threat is being exerted at tremendous dollar expense to us U.S. taxpayers, at considerable detriment to our general economy, and at great personal pain and inconvenience to the many brave members of our armed forces and their families. Is there anyone, anywhere, who can seriously doubt that if that threat were removed, or even eased, Saddam would immediately revert to his old evil ways? - Steve Tesla West Hills Paying the bills What relevant information did President George W. These misguided liberals should merely take a moment to glance down at the floor and start counting the empty cartridge casings. - Edmond Henry Mission Hills Susan B. Anthony I would like to wish Susan B. Anthony a happy birthday on Feb. 15. That day commemorates the 183rd anniversary of her birthday. Most people recognize the name Susan B. Anthony as that of the great women's rights The effort to secure equal rights for women and to remove gender discrimination from laws, institutions, and behavioral patterns. The women's rights movement began in the nineteenth century with the demand by some women reformers for the right to vote, known as suffrage, and campaigner. She was indeed instrumental in helping women achieve the right to vote in 1920. She was opposed to slavery and legal prostitution. She believed everyone should have the right to vote. Susan B. Anthony believed that all people should be treated equally and she made no exception for the unborn; she was opposed to abortion. Susan B. Anthony believed that unborn children had the right to life and she referred to abortion as ``child murder'' in her newspaper, ``The Revolution.'' - Melody Hunter Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. I guess it makes the wheelchair access to the diamond lanes faster. Even funnier are the four blinking pedestrian lights, complete with push buttons, that run day and night. Must be for the illegal flower vendors who constantly clog the off-ramps because this is wilderness. There are no pedestrians or wheelchairs here on the mountain. Chatsworth Wild-card juries Re ``Justice not served in trial of pot grower, juror juror n. any person who actually serves on a jury. Lists of potential jurors are chosen from various sources such as registered voters, automobile registration or telephone directories. says'' (Feb. 9): No one wants to serve on a jury, and you have shown clearly one of the reasons why. Juries are the wild card of the legal system and those in the legal system want to control it and bend it to their will. People on juries frequently feel justice has not been done. Happy judges make for people not being able to sleep at nights. Jury duty has come to be not a popular thing. It is a totally miserable experience at times. Stop hiding it. People hate it and everything about it. - Rikio Matsunami Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. Bush's body bags Re ``Our priorities'' (Your Opinion, Feb. 7): I agree with Julie Aguilar. Call the astronauts explorers or adventurers, but not heroes. The heroes are the servicemen who lost their lives in Afghanistan and those who will die in Iraq if the cowboy has his war. When the body bags arrive, he won't be going on national TV to honor and grieve for the service people and the TV preachers and the churches won't be having special services for them. No special candles or bells tolling because it is not a big PR event for the world. - Lee Brandt Burbank Still looks richer Stephen Pettine (``Are we richer,'' Feb. 10) worries that the statistics I gave on income may be misleading. He can consult my source, Table A-1, Money Income in The U.S.: 2000, U.S. Census Bureau, available on the Web. All figures in the table are adjusted for inflation. Income is given in nine ranges, eight in $10,000 increments or less, the last for incomes over $100,000. Between 1967 and 2000 the percentage of families in the six ranges at or below $50,000 decreased and the percent in the three ranges above all increased. Still looks like richer to me. - Bob Harding Northridge Reagan/Bush years Re ``Heroes and a heel'' (Feb. 11): During the Reagan/Bush years, tax receipts doubled and 18 million jobs were created. The military buildup brought an end to the Cold War and we won a war in the Middle East. However, social spending, especially Social Security and Medicare, exploded by 600 percent, most of the debt. If we had followed the Democratic agenda, higher unemployment and a much higher deficit would have resulted. When the costs of the ``bubble economy'' of the 1990s are removed ($4 trillion-plus), the Clinton years weren't that good after all, and today we don't have the men or equipment needed to fight the 1991 war. - Greg Parks Northridge Proof certain It has long been studied and seriously debated whether violence on television and in movies impacted upon and motivated individuals to engage in similar behavior.
