PUBLIC FORUM GETTING THE GRAY OUT.

After listening to Gray Davis' speech the other night, I have lost all respect - there wasn't much left - for our governor. He continues to blame someone else, the right wing, for his lack of leadership. The problems he inherited, he made worse. It's a ``they're after me, the man you voted for'' mentality that he is using to try to drum up emotional support.

I don't want a governor who's concerned about losing his political position. I want a governor who has the guts to be held accountable for his actions and who doesn't blame others for his mistakes. I want a governor who signs a bill with the public interest at heart, not the special interests.

Rabbit out of a hat

The ``wizards'' of Sacramento are at it again. With a little hocus-pocus, they are misdirecting the public and focusing the attention of voters on everything but the real reason for the recall. It's not a right-wing conspiracy, coup attempt by Republicans, mob rule or the destruction of the democratic system as we know it.

It is the right of the people of the state of California to fire an elected official for poor performance. I can understand the governor's concern. God forbid we should judge him on his record. And if Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante can't see what's plainly broke, why should we choose him to fix it?

Bill Simon's lackluster campaign in the general election proved he hasn't the imagination or leadership ability to govern California. A form of government

Leonard C. Snebold (Your Opinions, Aug. 22) complains of the ``ignorant'' who are referring to the Bush administration as Nazis or fascists. This is half a straw-man argument, as no one has - nor does he cite someone who supposedly has - referred to the Bush administration as Nazis.

Though he is right that the German word ``Nazi'' does translate into ``national socialism National Socialism or Nazism, doctrines and policies of the National Socialist German Workers' party, which ruled Germany under Adolf Hitler from 1933 to 1945. ,'' the Nazis were socialists in name only. They were - as was Italy at the time, and as we as a nation are now - corporate fascists. This is not to say that our country is now engaging in such atrocities as the murder of the disabled and gypsies or of Jews in ghettos or concentration camps. It is only to comment upon our present economic system.

Absolutely right

Thanks to Leonard C. Snebold for succinctly stating the difference between conservatives and fascists (Your Opinions, Aug. 22). He is absolutely correct. Unfortunately, a lot of people calling themselves conservatives these days more closely fit his description of fascists, as they expand the size of government and find new ways for it to intrude into our private lives.

Where have all the real conservatives gone? Certainly not to Washington, D.C.

Christian hypocrites

Dictating to me

When my partner had a car accident and was rushed to the hospital, the clerical staff, without hesitation, let me into the emergency room to be with my significant other. I have taken my spouse to many faculty functions where he has been treated with respect and the utmost courtesy.

President George W. Bush and his crew of evangelical hypocrites do not believe that my significant other and I should be entitled to the right to a legal union. How nice that adulterers and embezzlers can dictate to me what I should be entitled to as a taxpaying, law-abiding citizen.

I told you four months ago the major oil companies would come up with their annual, phony excuses to raise the gas prices. Two refineries in Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  closed down at the same time the Arizona pipeline fire happened. Gee, at least it wasn't the old phony Southern California refinery fire that we usually get, huh?

Fleeing the state

Hooray for Thomas Sowell and his Aug. 12 column on why people are leaving California. I'll never let the politicians chase me out of the state I have lived in for the last 60 years. As for the people who have left, there is a good reason.

According to federal statistics covering housing, food, clothing, transportation, health care, utilities and miscellaneous goods and services In economics, economic output is divided into physical goods and intangible services. Suppressing development

The solution to our electrical problems is the use of fuel cells. The Discovery Channel had a program about fuel cells. One of the things those in the program said was that every residence would soon have an appliance that would make its own electric power. Every manned space flight had fuel-cell power. Many hospitals have fuel-cell backup. The public needs to demand fuel-cell power.

The automobile and petroleum companies are holding back development because ey would be the big losers.

Just the facts

Henry Terusa needs to check his facts (``Look at Democrats,'' Your Opinions, Aug. 21). On Dec. 11, 1941, Germany and Italy first declared war on the United States. The official numbers for the atomic bombings of Japan appear to be 152,034 dead, 125,957 injured. Dropping the bombs ended the war and saved countless American and Japanese lives. The Japanese army was intact and would have fought to the death defending the troops' homeland.

Comparing the magnitude of World War II to Iraq is like comparing apples to oranges. I support President George W. Bush and think he is doing a good job, but FDR and Truman were two of our greatest presidents, and Bush is not in their league, yet.
