PUBLIC FORUM GAS AND GREED.Gasoline prices have passed the $2 mark on the way to whatever price the oil companies think they can get away with. State and local government officials have been strangely quiet about this. The lack of action by the state is probably motivated by the same thing that motivates the oil companies' raise in prices - greed. The more the public pays for gas the more tax revenue goes into state and local government coffers, most likely to pay for the bill for gasoline state and local officials use in their government-owned cars. As usual, it's all about money - how much money can they squeeze from us while our standard of living plummets so the oil companies and politicians can line their pockets. - John R. Schlank Granada Hills Smells like profit How interesting that the story about gasoline prices heading toward $3 a gallon lands on Page 1, but the story about how the GOP is one vote away from approving drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) covers 19,049,236 acres (79,318 km²) in northeastern Alaska, in the North Slope region. Bush doesn't care if gas jumps to $10 a gallon, he's a Texas oilman Oil´man n. 1. One who deals in oils; formerly, one who dealt in oils and pickles. 2. When our gas bill is higher than our food and housing, are we going to demand that our government kill for gas? We are the consumers of Axis of Evil oil so we should demand that our government start developing alternate fuels now before we start killing each other for a gallon of gas. - Ted Pearson Ted Pearson (born 1948 in Palo Alto, California) is an American poet. Valencia Young lives Re: ``Young and dumb'' (Your Opinions, March 11): In one of the March 11 letters about the Canoga High School peace protest, the writer asks, ``What makes these kids think that anyone with half a brain should listen to or care what they say about something as serious as a war and foreign policy in general?'' Answer: Because the average age of our Vietnam soldiers was 19 and because many of our boys sent by Bush to the Middle East today are 18 years old? Young by all means but not dumb, just fatally naive. Support our troops "Support our troops" is a slogan commonly used in the United States and in Canada in reference to the United States Military and the Canadian Forces (Army, Air & Navy). The slogan has been used in the recent conflicts, including the Gulf War[1] and Iraq war. - bring them home. - Elizabeth Colon Goleta Looting students Re ``Appalled by photo'' (Your Opinions, March 10): I totally agree with Lynne Lemm. The photos of the looting students have no place on the cover of the Daily News. They should be on the wall of the post office with the rest of the criminals. - Tom Hodges Reseda Moorpark pride I found the picture of the victorious Moorpark High Academic Decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events. team to be an interesting juxtaposition to the picture of the looting Canoga Park High students from the previous day. On to the Nationals. - Timothy Grimes Moorpark Democracy in Iraq Iraq and Democracy focuses on the history of democracy in Iraq. Moreover, the article presents various opinions of Middle East Scholars and Politicians on contemporary debates about the future prospect for democracy in Iraq. A common complaint about President George W. Bush's handling of Iraq seems to be that there's no tradition of democracy in Iraq. Well there wasn't any tradition of democracy in Japan prior to World War II, and Germany's only experience with democracy resulted in an electoral victory for Adolf Hitler's Nazi Party Nazi Party German political party of National Socialism. Founded in 1919 as the German Workers' Party, it changed its name to the National Socialist German Workers' Party when Adolf Hitler became leader (1920–21). . I think we did a good job introducing democracy in both nations, and should be able to do so in Iraq as well. - Robert van Peer Chatsworth Seems hypocritical Wow, what a great new weapon this new bomb, Massive Ordinance Air Blast, is. Destructive capability of a small nuclear bomb. A weapon of mass destruction weapon of mass destruction (WMD) Weapon with the capacity to inflict death and destruction indiscriminately and on a massive scale. The term has been in currency since at least 1937, when it was used to describe massed formations of bomber aircraft. for sure. In a day and age when we are going to war because of other countries developing weapons of mass destruction Weapons that are capable of a high order of destruction and/or of being used in such a manner as to destroy large numbers of people. Weapons of mass destruction can be high explosives or nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological weapons, but exclude the means of transporting or , it just seems hypocritical. Besides this bomb can't be used in this war or any other invasion as we are planning because in today's wars we are invading cities to get at their leader. The use of this bomb on a city is nothing short of mass murder. - Vatch Arouchian Reseda Typical We as a nation have seen our president and his administration do some incompetent, stupid actions and this situation we have with Turkey is a typical example. If our planned military action on Iraq included the use of Turkey as a base for an attack, we should have resolved the use of Turkey's ports and land before we sent any troops and/or equipment to that area. Now we are being subjected to Turkey raising its monetary demands for the use of their country. This example really typifies the lack of intelligence in this Bush presidency, and provides more fuel to the worldwide populace who are against the Bush war with Iraq. - Victor Allstead Woodland Hills Economic terrorism The concept of terrorism economic is discussed and generally used in a polemical or demagogic way to associate the term “terrorism” a country, a company or a marked group of abuses. Ken Lay (ex-CEO of ex-Enron) and his associates stole nearly $4 billion from Enron's customers, investors, employees and U.S. taxpayers. Yet, the impact of that crime, the loss of trust in the stock market, was a thousand times worse. The market has dropped nearly $4 trillion since its all-time high on March 10, three years ago. The economic damage to our country was far greater than the loss of property Osama bin Ladin caused on 9-11, so Ken Lay's crime could be classified as ``economic terrorism.'' If it were, U.S. government prosecutors could shut down his foreign bank accounts and bring him to justice. They haven't. Why? - Bruce Joffe Piedmont Enemy within Re ``Secure borders'' (Your Opinions, March 9): Ray Holm hit the nail right on the head. Our elected cronies that raised their right hand to uphold our laws are only interested in their ego problems and how many votes, legal or illegal. Elton Gallegly Elton W. Gallegly (born March 7 1944), an American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1987, currently representing the 24th District of California (map). , Brad Sherman, our new Homeland Security and believe it or not, even our president and past presidents are making and have made a mockery of our immigration laws. Yes, it is very sad what is happening to America and its sovereignty. Seems our laws mean nothing anymore. See what this dude got that sold fake driver's licenses to the 9-ll terrorists: yes, only parole. Yeah, of course he is sorry, what the hell, only about 3,000 died. Yes the enemy is within; wake up, government. - John Lee Newhall VICA VICA Vocational Industrial Clubs of America VICA Video Conferencing Alliance (UK) VICA Vocational Industrial Chapters of America VICA Vision Counsel of America responds During his 2 1/2 decades of public service, Councilman Hal Bernson has been a leader of whom the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. can be proud.
