PUBLIC FORUM DISSING DEMOCRATS.It was with great dismay that I read press coverage of the 12 Eagle Scouts who were booed by members of the California Delegation to the Democratic National Convention. The delegates were making a statement about the Supreme Court decision upholding the Boy Scout organization's ban on openly gay individuals being Scout leaders. Unfortunately, the delegates chose to voice their opinion to Scouts who were 15 to 18 years of age, children who had nothing whatsoever to do with that Supreme Court decision. It was a great honor to these boys to be part of this historic event. It was probably going to be one of the highlights of their young lives. The adult delegates' behavior was at best, misguided; at worst, it was the act of bullies and, as such, shameful. I am a lifelong Democrat, but if any of the delegates who participated in this disgraceful display are elected officials, I will be contributing money to and supporting their opponents. In addition, the Democratic National Committee should strongly reprimand REPRIMAND, punishment. The censure which in some cases a public office pronounces against an offender. 2. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, Edison's monopoly, except Edison abuses its much more than Bill Gates (person) Bill Gates - William Henry Gates III, Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, which he co-founded in 1975 with Paul Allen. I strongly suspect that if Edison were hit by a fine that was only a small fraction of the one imposed on Gates, that it would repair its outages in hours, instead of days. And it would listen to its customers' complaints, instead of playing a recording telling them how how to save electricity and never a word about how to prevent lightning from knocking out our service. I think that a fine of about $50 million just as a warning might help. Anything is worth a try. - Cleo A. Taylor Woodland Hills Fishy fish·y adj. fish·i·er, fish·i·est 1. Resembling or suggestive of fish, as in taste or odor. 2. Cold or expressionless: a fishy stare. 3. supes Seems like a real conspiracy by the supervisors to keep this fellow Christopher Skinnell from putting term limits for the L.A. County supervisors on the ballot. Seems fishy how the verification process threw his efforts out. I was especially insulted by Registrar Recorder/County Clerk Conny McCormack's attitude that she could not do a thing about putting the issue on the ballot after they erred in their voter verification process, spending 250,000 of our tax dollars. My question to her and the supervisors is: Does she or they have any accountability for her actions? - James Crowley James Crowley (died 21 January, 1946) was an Irish nationalist and politician. In response to Don Malvin's criticism of my letter (Public Forum, Aug. 22) concerning the trustworthiness of atheists: First, people of faith must admit they're not perfect. We're all sinful, and must seek redemption. Second, I won't deny that nonbelievers can, out of a sense of ``social responsibility without fear of divine retribution'' conduct themselves as good citizens. However, given a choice between relying upon those who ``do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with their God'' and those who aver that ``God is dead, therefore everything is permitted'' I will, like John Locke, choose the former over the latter. - Gary Inbinder Woodland Hills Here's to you Hats off to the Daily News for publishing Susan Shelly's op-ed piece (Opinions, Aug. 22) regarding the SAG/AFTRA commercials strike. Newspaper coverage by your competitor is as rare as finding a Democrat in Orange County. Thank you. - Clive Rosengren Sunland Up to code This letter is written in response to your article of Aug. 3 and your subsequent editorial Aug. 7, regarding perceived problems with the Systematic Code Enforcement Code Enforcement is the act of enforcing a set of s, principles, or laws (especially written ones) and insuring observance of a system of norms or customs. SCEP is responsible for inspecting all rental units in the city for properties with two or more units on a lot. Your editorial makes the assessment that there is ``no coherent system for cracking down on violators'' based on a report provided by Professor Gary Blasi of UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX . The Los Angeles Housing Department has met with Professor Blasi regarding his report and has indicated to him that his data is dated and erroneous. The Daily News has never contacted the Los Angeles Housing Department to discuss the data in Professor Blasi's report. Pinney General Manager Los Angeles Housing Department Whose code is it? The apartment that my wife and I have been renting for more than three years was inspected approximately four months ago under the Systematic Code Enforcement Program. The inspector found and was directed to numerous code violations. To this day, we have heard nothing regarding the repair of these violations. Two weeks ago, we were given notification of an increase in our monthly rent. The increase equates to 25 percent. The increase to some would seem minuscule. However, to me it represents half of a week's disability pay, which is a whole helluva hell·uv·a adj. Slang Used as an intensive: He's a helluva great guy. [Alteration of hell of a.] lot.
