PUBLIC FORUM DIG A LITTLE DEEPER.How sad that so many contributors to this page feel that since Sen. John Kerry Let's get real here - the man looked good because he spent the day getting his nails and hair done and tanning his face. President George W. Bush rose at 5 a.m. to spend the day helping the Florida hurricane victims. Unfortunately, that was his priority - not the debate that evening. Unless you truly believe in what Kerry said and long for a leader who takes a variety of positions on every issue, I would caution against voting for shallow and superficial reasons. Dig a little deeper and see that Bush is not only the stronger leader but an all-around better man as well. - Nancy Payson Encino Befuddled administration Last week's presidential debate and recent damage control by Condoleezza Rice shows an administration befuddled by Iraq. It amazes me that the administration does not realize that Iraq has not been a centerpiece in the world since Hammurabi drafted his codes. It is clear that the president follows the same American bravado that mired mire n. 1. An area of wet, soggy, muddy ground; a bog. 2. Deep slimy soil or mud. 3. Quicksand is usually found in a hollow at the mouth of a large river or along a flat stretch of stream or beach where pools of water become partly filled in Iraq. Ironically, this puts Sen. John Kerry in the same shoes today as Richard Nixon in 1973, to formulate an exit strategy. - Leigh Datzker Woodland Hills O negative I just receive my information pamphlet on Proposition O. A job for a person with no relevant experience or knowledge? Stuckey says he supports Mayor Hahn's ``no-kill'' policy. Stuckey ominously reveals, ``the question is, what do we have to do to get to that point?'' ``Question?'' Our city cannot afford another general manager who wonders what to do. Qualified candidates applied who know the solutions. The City Council must reject the unprepared Stuckey. The term is used to describe programs that range from government operation of medical facilities to national health-insurance plans. ) then Plan B would be to enable a situation to occur that would force the government to ``rescue'' medical care. How? Bankrupt the system. How? Mandate a patient-to-nurse ratio, ignore illegal aliens crossing the border from all over the world, allow noncitizens to sign up for unrestricted Medi-Cal benefits, allow malpractice settlements without a limit, lead the nation to dictate wages and benefits rather than the market. California will lead the nation into a socialized so·cial·ize v. so·cial·ized, so·cial·iz·ing, so·cial·iz·es v.tr. 1. To place under government or group ownership or control. 2. It is ironic that the latest ER closed early - in time for election publicity - to encourage uneducated voters who might think Proposition 67 will solve the problem. - Lorraine Mabbett West Hills Licensing problems Re ``Drive to get fair treatment vetoed again'' (Their Opinions, Oct. 5): California, like most developed countries, recognizes driver's licenses issued by a person's state or country of origin as a valid document for the purpose of operating a motor vehicle. All Joe Rodriguez's friend ``Soledad'' has to do to drive legally is get a driver's license issued by Mexico, her country of origin, and her supposed problem is solved. More importantly, though, is this: I recently helped my 18-year-old daughter register for the first time to vote. Per the registration instructions, the only identification required for voter registration Voter registration is the requirement in some democracies for citizens to check in with some central registry before being allowed to vote in elections. An effort to get people to register is known as a voter registration drive. Centralized/compulsory vs. is a valid California driver's license. Until and unless that is changed, there's no way I'll support an undifferentiated driver's license for illegal aliens. - Brian Baker Brian Baker may refer to several people:
Saugus Economics 101 In case there are still some ``undecided'' voters out there (I doubt it, but ...), here's a quick economics lesson: Would you a) rather have an employer pay higher taxes, or b) would you rather have him offer you a job? Now isn't that simple? - Mike Savell Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. A defeat for Kerry Sen. John Kerry has said that if elected he would offer nuclear fuel to Iran if it destroys its centrifuges. Now Iran has rejected that offer. Kerry has suffered his first foreign-policy defeat, and he hasn't even been elected. In the nuclear-proliferation race, there must not be any more winners. Life is dangerous enough with the nations that already are nuclear, without allowing unstable regimes and fundamentalist nations to join the club. Kerry's ideas are naive and, quite frankly, scary. - Craig S. Hawley Reseda We need Kerry I own a small clothing business, selling all over the country to middle America Middle America 1 A region of southern North America comprising Mexico, Central America, and sometimes the West Indies. Middle American adj. & n. . Under the Bush administration, I have watched this business come to almost a halt. Our customers have either lost their jobs, lost their houses and/or live in fear of having their jobs sent overseas. This is a nationwide problem. America cannot tolerate another four years of this. We need a president who can keep the jobs here in the USA. When Americans don't have jobs, crime goes up. Then the terrorists become our own people. America needs John Kerry. - Vicki Costanzo Burbank Make the war seem real I am concerned as to why we never see on TV the dead American soldiers that are returned home in coffins? No pictures are ever shown, no videos, nothing. Occasionally their names are shown, or maybe a picture of them back when they first joined the military, but never pictures of them dead or even wounded. I think this is unfortunate. The president spoke at the debate as if he cares a great deal about honoring the soldiers and about not wanting to send the wrong message. However, every day these same brave soldiers are reduced to nothing more than casualty numbers. The American people need to see such images to realize how real this war is. They need to see that our people are dying and that families are left behind mourning for their loss, and their lives are forever changed as a result of it. - Aaron Naseh Encino |
