exercising its ownership of the right-of-way that will be used for the future Valley bus way did a good job of emphasizing the very real impact on the lives of lessees and land owners on/near that right-of-way. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough emphasizing that every one of these lessees and landowners had to sign documents declaring their awareness of this publicly owned Publicly owned can refer to:
  • Public company, a company which is permitted to offer its securities (stock, bonds, etc.) for sale to the general public, typically through a stock exchange
  • Public ownership, of government-owned corporations
 land.

The main reason the MTA's actions are so painful for those lessees/landowners is that they are decades overdue. The Valley has long deserved its own rail line, and if the bus way is ever converted to a direct, above-ground extension of the Red Line, it will be done both on publicly owned land and be built along a route that provides an alternative to the 101.

I would like to suggest to Broad that he spend some of his millions the way Kirk Douglas spends his - by paving school grounds for kids, etc. Riordan, you had a library named after you, how about joining Broad and do some of these things "These Things" is an EP by She Wants Revenge, released in 2005 by Perfect Kiss, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. Work with us

Secession was defeated, but I'm glad you're taking it in a positive direction. Secession wasn't/isn't the answer to our problems, for it was going to bring more misery. The San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

I do hope that you folks do what you have to do (I don't mean revive the secession movement) to work with leaders from all areas of Los Angeles for the well-being of all of Los Angeles. It's no big secret that the City of Angels has a lot of illnesses, and that has to be addressed and corrective action A corrective action is a change implemented to address a weakness identified in a management system. Normally corrective actions are instigated in response to a customer complaint, abnormal levels if internal nonconformity, nonconformities identified during an internal audit or  taken. Don't give up

I am all for trying secession again. I believe there are many like me in the San Fernando Valley who would like to begin anew for separate cityhood. If such be the case, then why delay? Let's start now. The fire may be out but the embers are hot and glowing. Don't give up. Do not accept defeat.

Duplicitous initiative

Secession won by a paltry 1 percent in the Valley and only carried City Council districts 3 and 12 (where the white folk live). It was defeated in the other five Valley districts - and overwhelmingly defeated by our brethren to the south. Yet you continue to interpret this underwhelming un·der·whelm

Try again

The Daily News headline on Nov. 7, announced ``Hahn - come join us.'' Who in his right mind would join with an antagonist? Surely not an informed Valley resident. If at first you don't secede, try, try again.

Reflection on us

As a public high school teacher I find it odd that my school has the energy to support the special-interest groups on campus and has the resources to celebrate the holidays of its minority students yet it lacks the will or interest to recognize Veterans Day and the contributions and personal sacrifices our American veterans have made for our country.

Perhaps this is reflective of our country as a whole. We make heroes of people like Muhammad Ali who refuse to serve in our military, and we idolize i·dol·ize

Not about them

Re ``Pearl vets survive political correctness attack'' (Nov.14):

Let us remind Councilwoman Janice Hahn that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. Let us also remind her that the film in question, ``Tora! Tora! Tora!'' has nothing to do with our friends in the Japanese- American community she seems to be so worried about.

Good ol' boy

Surprise, surprise. Saddam Hussein has accepted the U.N. resolutions that will allow inspections to resume in Iraq ... (as if he had a choice). Be careful Saddam, this is not the spineless wimp you played three-card monte with in the last administration. President Bush says what he means and means what he says. G.W. is a good 'ol boy from Texas who is sitting on a hair trigger and you are in his sight.

Microsoft settlement

With most provisions of the Microsoft settlement with the U.S. Justice Department accepted by Judge Kollar-Kotelly last week, I hope her decision will spawn a new era of economic recovery and technological innovation. Already, some Wall Street analysts are claiming the settlement has positively affected the market.

As Microsoft's competitors react to Judge Kollar-Kotelly's decision to throw out their alternative settlement, they should focus on building better and higher quality products. In doing so, they can help, not hinder, our nation's economic recovery. After five years, and millions of dollars, the time has come for the technology industry to refocus on research, development and job creation - not litigation An action brought in court to enforce a particular right. Good trips, bad trips

Gee, after reading Barbara Capodieci's (Your Opinion, Nov. 11) comments questioning the expenditure of President Bush flying from D.C. to Crawford to vote on election day, I have to wonder where she was when the Clintons were flying to China, Africa and India, etc., with most of their trips costing in excess of $50 million.

Prop. 13 limited

Re Richard Clarke's Nov. 6 Your Opinion letter on tax assessment:

You are aware that all Prop. 13 does is limit the increase in assessment to 2 percent per year. It does not limit the charmingly titled ``voter indebtedness,'' i.e., bonds. This is why you have seen an increase in the number of bonds on the ballot. And now that the required votes to pass school bonds has been dropped from 67 percent to 55 percent, you will see even more. You want to know why your property taxes went up? Did you vote for any bonds this election?
