PUBLIC FORUM BUSH IN EUROPE.

at the election results, I find myself in President Bush's corner - this is the result of his trip to Europe.

Seeing these moral midgets, aka European leaders, tear Bush apart was just too much. Only Putin of Russia showed any attentive respect. I still will do all I can to limit Dubya to one term. I'll rip him plenty, but God help any foreigners Foreigners

Texas tradition

Mary Bempechat, in her June 21 Public Forum letter regarding Safire's column about President Bush, ridiculed the idea of Bush looking Putin in the eyes and getting his opinion of the man from that simple action. The president is a true Texan, and as a fellow Texan, I can vouch that what the president did is a tradition in our state.

Looking at a man face-to-face and sizing him up is common in Texas politics and business. It has worked pretty darn well for us Texans over the last century and a half. And as for what President Bush will be doing in 3 1/2 years, he won't be out of a job, as Bempechat believes - he'll be getting ready for his second inauguration INAUGURATION. This word was applied by the Romans to the ceremony of dedicating some temple, or raising some man to the priesthood, after the augurs had been consulted. It was afterwards applied to the installation (q.v.  day.

Not Bush's fault

How can the Democrats say that the only reason we're going into a recession is that the president uses the ``R-word''? That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Consumer confidence was falling long before George Bush Jr. ever said the word ``recession.'' Democrats need to stop passing blame onto Republicans, especially when based on such frivolous claims.

Republicans are the ones fighting to strengthen the economy with tax cuts while Democrats want to keep the high revenues so that they can give more money to people who do nothing to earn it. Saying the word ``recession'' is no big deal, but turning it into the catalyst for one is a big deal. The Democrats are the ones who have made the word ``recession'' a reality.

Sheriff of the city

The estimate from the Sheriff's Department that it can police the Valley for $100 million less a year is worth consideration. Why not convert the entire policing of the city to the sheriff? The Sheriff's Department seems to be immune from major scandals, or at least it handles them better, and that may be because the sheriff is elected by the people and not appointed by politicians.

The sheriff answers to his general constituency and not special-interest politicians. In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke"

Busway alternative

Everyone seems to be for or against the Chandler route or for or against the Oxnard route for a rapid busway. Both routes will cost hundreds of millions of tax dollars and disrupt the lives of many people. These 94 buses per day will have control of traffic signals, so be prepared to wait if you have to cross their route. The so-called stations will not have adequate parking, so the streets around the stops will become parking lots.

Imperfect world

Re ``Women need to speak out'' (Viewpoint, May 31):

Nicole Siddall wants to parade a bunch of women before us who now regret having had abortions. She claims studies show 64 percent of women were forced into abortions and ``more than 84 percent state they would have kept their babies, under better circumstances.'' Under better circumstances, I am sure we would all do a lot of things differently.

I am sure I could get thousands of women who have had their children adopted to tell how they wonder at night where are their kids now. How are they doing? Even if we wanted to ``do the right thing,'' it is mathematically impossible. There are not near enough good men to supply all the good women with proper husbands.

Father's lament

Reading ``A father's place,'' (Viewpoint, June 17), I can relate to all five points that need reforming. I have spent money on legal paperwork and lawyers only to have a judge rule against me every time I appear in court. Maybe the sixth point should be the amount of fees that can be charged.

Time spent in the courthouse, three to five hours; time spent in front of the judge, 10 minutes. I thank you for bringing this subject out in the open on this day of fatherhood, and hopefully some politician will be paying attention Noun 1. paying attention - paying particular notice (as to children or helpless people); "his attentiveness to her wishes"; "he spends without heed to the consequences"

Here's why

Campaign reform

It is important that we urge our representatives to help preserve freedom of speech on the Internet and everywhere else by voting no on HR 380, the Shays-Meehan Campaign Reform Act of 2001.

The Constitution authorizes Congress to prescribe the ``times, places and manner of holding elections.'' It clearly does not authorize Congress to regulate election campaigns. Rep. Tom De Lay maintains that this legislation is a corrupt regulatory scheme designed to muzzle muzzle

Blame yourself

I agree with Kathleen Parker's June 17 Viewpoint column, ``Overweight people next?'' I think it was ludicrous that so much money was awarded to Richard Boeken because he contracted cancer from smoking. He should not have been awarded any money. How dare he blame Philip Morris because he was weak and couldn't stop smoking.

We have to put the blame on ourselves if we don't heed warnings like ``don't drink and drive,'' ``wear helmets while riding a bike,'' and ``smoking can be injurious to your health.''
