PUBLIC FORUM BOY SCOUTS.

I was very annoyed to read about Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg's viewpoint about the Boy Scouts of America Noun 1. Boy Scouts of America - a corporation that operates through a national council that charters local councils all over the United States; the purpose is character building and citizenship training , the city of Los Angeles

I was not myself a Boy Scout, but I was an adult leader at age 21. I was an assistant Scoutmaster in Troop No. 1. The Boy Scouts teach useful knowledge. There would not be the same fine organization that the Boy Scouts have always been if they must waver in their morals and their mores over time.

Wasn't a failure

Re ``Strike out,'' (Editorial, Oct. 13):

As county workers, we do not seek material superiority to the economically underprivileged employees in private industry. We seek relief from the category under which we currently fall: the working poor.

We are offended by any inferences to the effect that our strike was a failure. If this were true, what would have been the point of Cardinal Roger Mahony's plea for reprieve? What would have been the point of immediately continued negotiations between Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County officials and Local 660 of the Service Employees International Union?

A moral claim

That said, I certainly don't condone terrorism or attacks against innocent people. However, American and Israeli Jews have to accept the fact that there are good Palestinians who have a real moral claim to land in Israel. It is not their fault that the Roman Empire conquered the Kingdom of Israel "Commonwealth of Israel" redirects here. For the religious movement by that name, see The Twelve Tribes.

When this happens

Re Brodie Broderson's ``Palestinians have no Second Amendment rights'' (Public Forum, Oct. 13):

Last I heard, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and all the other Arab countries in the region hadn't adopted the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  Constitution either. So when this happens, we'll keep our fingers crossed that Israel follows.

Now how do we get those illegal assault rifles away from the Palestinian police, hummm?

Reconsidering trees

After reading ``Tree-bulations'' (Oct. 12), I realize how important it is for retail shop owners to reconsider their support of the tree-planting effort along Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. Once those trees are planted, shop owners must deal with surly city employees and their idiotic excuses whenever the trees require trimming.

One need only drive the boulevard to notice the overgrowth overgrowth

Rapid growth in the sales of a mutual fund's shares to the extent that the fund has difficulty finding promising new investments or it must take such large positions in individual investments that its trading flexibility is reduced.
that obscures business signs and storefronts. Sure, the trees look nice, but this is a commercial street, not a city park. Many business owners have paid tens of thousands of dollars for beautiful signs. One large tree can negate any benefit the sign would have provided, and the city is in no hurry to help.

Hope for teens

Re ``Lying, cheating `horribly high' among U.S. teens'' (Oct. 7):

It was a disturbing article indeed. Ah, but despair not, America. I predict a spectacular career for these youngsters as politicians and power brokers in the Democrat and Republican parties.

Look carefully

I just saw the commercial starring Gov. Gray Davis and former Gov. Pete Wilson endorsing Proposition 39. They talked about accountability and checks and audits like that was something new. That is what all of the folks looking to find a place in politics do every day. They tell us Proposition 38 has no provision for accountability, yet will not admit the money-grabbing Proposition 39 is not any better.

With today's politics I can only recommend the following: If a proposition causes your property taxes to go up, look carefully at it and then say no if you heart agrees.

Social promotion

I'm really tired of seeing the phrase ``social promotion.'' Isn't it time we called it what it really is: anti-social promotion?

When a child is pushed along with failing grades, no one benefits. Not the child, not the parent and especially not society as a whole. In most cases, the child will be doomed to failure, and society will be doomed to ever-escalating attempts to educate or reeducate re·ed·u·cate also re-ed·u·cate

Third party votes

I've heard it said that a vote for a third-party candidate is a wasted vote. It is not. Ours was never intended to be a two-party system. Every vote is meaningful.

The only way to throw away your vote is not to vote at all. Whoever wins must know that there is competition out there - if not this year, then four years from now. So don't waste your vote by not voting.

Missed the point

Anyone notice Gore's biblical faux pas in the second presidential debate? He stated that in his faith it is taught that ``where your heart is, there your treasure will be.'' Nice try, Mr. Vice President, but what Jesus actually said was, ``For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also'' (Matthew 6:21).

It might have been an innocent case of spiritual dyslexia dyslexia (dĭslĕk`sēə), in psychology, a developmental disability in reading or spelling, generally becoming evident in early schooling. To a dyslexic, letters and words may appear reversed, e.g. , but I can't help but think that his slip was revealing. The point Jesus made was that heart commitment follows what we value most. The Gore version implies that our values follow our ever-changing hearts. How ironic.

Caregivers stamp

Re ``Where's our stamp'' (Public Forum, Oct. 16):

After reading Arthur Sweet's letter regarding stamps honoring small business, I have one better: a stamp honoring the 25 million caregivers who take care of loved ones with chronic illnesses.

Caregivers, almost never recognized for their heroic efforts, suffer from stress and depression and are true heroes for taking care of loved ones with cognitive or other impairments. By the way, November is National Family Caregivers Month and Alzheimer's Disease Alzheimer's disease (ăls`hī'mərz, ôls–), degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia.  Awareness Month. Perhaps the post office should also consider a stamp to help stamp out such an insidious disease insidious disease (insid´ēus),

Inflation marches on

Once upon a time, it took 400,000 men to fake a Million Man March, and even that discrepancy generated more than a few giggles in the press. Then came the Million Mom March The Million Mom March had its roots in August 1999, when Donna Dees-Thomases, a New Jersey mom with a public relations background and political connections, was horrified that a gunman shot at children in Granada Hills, California. , which consisted of fewer than 100,000 people and far fewer mothers. Now we read that ``thousands'' of individuals, which probably means no more than 1,000 families, made up the Million Family March.

As the next logical step, I propose that two or three mathematicians meet for coffee and call their meeting the Million Mathematician March. The agenda of the MMM MMM Myeloid metaplasia with myelofibrosis, see there  would be to promote the saner, more responsible, common-sense use of numbers.
