Re ``Labor on Cruz control'' (Aug. 27):

The exact thing that the Founding Fathers predicted and that they attempted to prevent - a democracy. When asked upon leaving the convention hall, Benjamin Franklin replied to the woman's question of what kind of government we now had. His answer: ``Madam, we have created a republic, if you can keep it.''

When the majority, in this case labor, votes itself a raise and job protection, we have a democratic majority foisting their welfare upon the backs of others, and the others will have to pay for it. The welfare of the state of California is the very last thing on labor leaders' minds during this recall. Their welfare is foremost.

About polls

I was born 72 years ago in Glendale and have lived in the Valley since I was 10. I had never been polled until the last gubernatorial election by that other paper in town, and again last week by a San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  newspaper.

In both instances, I answered their questions as to age group, party affiliation and ethnicity. When I answered Caucasian or white, that was that. They thanked me for my time and hung up. Seems they weren't interested in my opinion of their poll questions. Well, it's Tom McClintock Thomas Miller "Tom" McClintock (born July 10, 1956 in White Plains, New York) is a California State Senator. He ran for Governor of California in the 2003 California recall election of Gray Davis and finished third out of 135 candidates with 13.5% of the overall vote.  for me.

Right idea, wrong office

Re ``Consider McClintock'' (Your Opinions, Aug. 25):

Instead of using Gray Davis and California, the writer's sentence works fifty times better as: Now that George W. Bush has taken the nation's biggest surplus and turned it into one of the biggest deficits, we're going to need an experienced leader to clean up this mess.

But I join the writer in his praise for McClintock. I have read his anti- abortion views, his NRA-style stand on gun control, his plans for denying rights to gay couples and his instant veto of legislation allowing certain illegal immigrants to have driver's licenses - and realize McClintock is an ultraconservative. The electorate of California will not give McClintock more than 12 percent of the vote. This gives my candidate, Cruz Bustamante, the governorship if Davis is recalled.

Go out in style

Gov. Davis: The little old lady was right - just quit. If you're really concerned about the children and the people, save us the $40 million to $60 million this carnival exhibition of a recall is costing the state.

It's obvious you cannot garner 50 percent of the vote, and, like it or not, Cruz Bustamante will win the Latino special interests bloc and become governor anyway.

Look, you could go out a statesman and a martyr. Only the press and myriad political analyzers will miss the burlesque burlesque (bûrlĕsk`) [Ital.,=mockery], form of entertainment differing from comedy or farce in that it achieves its effects through caricature, ridicule, and distortion. Not a conspiracy

In his speech, Gray Davis claimed that his recall is part of a ``right-wing conspiracy.'' However, how does he explain an approval rating lower than Nixon in a state that is primarily liberal Democratic, or the fact that there are more Democrats on the recall ballot than Republicans?

The 2 million people who signed the recall petition included both Republicans and Democrats. It is not a party issue, but an issue of incompetence and lack of faith and trust in our state's leader. On Oct. 7, Gray Davis will see that it is not a conspiracy, but the issue of the people at large reining in an out-of-control elected official. Hopefully this will also send a message to other self-serving politicians.

Everybody's fault

Let us put the mess that California is in into perspective. All the problems are not Gray Davis' fault, just as all the problems that the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. We have legislators, mayors, county supervisors, school superintendents, etc. (of both parties) who have helped push governments into these financial woes.

Let's put the blame where it is due: It is everybody's fault. It will take everybody to get us out of this situation, and it will also take time.

Starts at the top

Re ``Cheaters prospering'' (Aug. 25):

With all the corruption in our state and local governments, it is surprising that there has not been more in the news. But corruption starts at the top, not at the bottom. For example, some politicians' appointees get large pay checks for a few hours' work, such as with a previous candidate for L.A. mayor. And at the very top are the voters. Government corruption will not stop until the voters demand more from their leaders, stop looking for Looking for

License to vote

If the proposed bill to allow illegal immigrants the right to get California driver's licenses is signed by the governor, and it appears that it will be, since the Department of Motor Vehicles In the United States of America, Department of Motor Vehicles (or DMV) is a commonly used name of the government agency of a U.S. state which administers the registration of automobiles (e.g., by issuing license plates), and/or the licensing of drivers (e.g.  is not allowed to ask for proof of citizenship, if said illegal alien checks the ``Do you wish to register to vote'' box, is that all it takes to become a voting noncitizen?

Or does anyone really think that the voter registration box will be removed from the application? I think not. That's why Gov. Gray Davis and Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante like the bill so much.

Democrats and war

This letter is to set Henry Terusa, (Your Opinions, Aug. 21) straight regarding Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman For other persons named Harry Truman, see Harry Truman (disambiguation).
Harry S. Truman (May 8 1884 – December 26 1972) was the thirty-third President of the United States (1945–1953); as vice president, he succeeded to the office upon the death of Franklin D.
. First, FDR did not declare war on Germany; he and Congress declared war on Japan after Pearl Harbor was attacked. Adolf Hitler, despite his high command not agreeing with him, declared war on the USA because he decided to aid Japan's war effort.

Truman decided to use the atomic bomb atomic bomb or A-bomb, weapon deriving its explosive force from the release of atomic energy through the fission (splitting) of heavy nuclei (see nuclear energy). The first atomic bomb was produced at the Los Alamos, N.Mex.  on Japan after they refused to surrender and the U.S. casualties were estimated to be over 100,000 if we invaded Japan. Both cities that were bombed were centers of major war production. As for Lyndon Johnson, I think he was totally incompetent in the handling of the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. .

There's a word for it

Re ``Double terror'' (Aug. 20):

Your headline for the suicide bombings in Jerusalem and Baghdad was absolutely right. Whereas so many newspapers, like the L.A. Times (and other media) avoid the word ``terror,'' especially in headlines, unless Americans are killed, the Daily News showed moral clarity and simple common sense. Please keep on using the ``terror'' word to describe these atrocities that make peace between Israel and the Palestinians impossible.
