PUBLIC FORUM ARNOLD'S BUDGET.

Re ``Budget fiasco'' (Editorial, July 28):

You can berate Governor Schwarzenegger for the budget as much as you want, but he did his best and got little support from the spenders in Sacramento. Between John Burton John Burton is the name of:
  • John L. Burton, American Congressman and California State Senator
  • John Burton (fundraiser)
  • John Burton (Political Agent) Amanuensis to Tony Blair
  • John Burton (actor)
and Fabian Nunez we're lucky we didn't get the tax increase that Jackie Goldberg Jackie Goldberg (born June 16, 1937) is an American politician and teacher, and a member of the Democratic Party. She is a former member of the California State Assembly.  thought would be a wonderful idea.

Burton is said to have declared ``the state budget, for example, cannot be established by executive fiat or voter initiative.'' True enough, but kicking out a governor didn't seem to change anyone's attitude in Sacramento. I've come to the conclusion they (our wonderful legislators) probably don't understand and really think we voters are either misguided or nuts. It must be grand to be right all the time.

Cumbersome malaise

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (German pronunciation (IPA): [ˈaɐ̯nɔlt ˈaloɪ̯s ˈʃvaɐ̯ʦənˌʔɛɡɐ]  is right when he asks, ``Why would we go and give the money that is so much needed for education in this state to the union drivers rather than giving it right into the classroom and giving it for education for our children?''

The governor is doing exactly what we the people elected him to do: Cut through the onerous, cumbersome malaise that the union has fomented over three decades of deceit and lead the state. He and Assembly Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy Kevin McCarthy may refer to any of the following individuals:

  • Kevin McCarthy (politician) (born 1965), United States Congressman from California

Theater

Inclusionary housing

Re ``Chick offering U.S. Army advice'' (July 27):

Controller Laura Chick's own city could really benefit if she would analyze and report on how negatively the city's rental housing policies are affecting the city fiscally. As established, 60 percent of the city's Affordable Housing Trust Fund would finance tax-exempt apartments, which would progressively erode more and more funds from the city's tax receipts, further depriving us of police and other vital public services Public services is a term usually used to mean services provided by government to its citizens, either directly (through the public sector) or by financing private provision of services. .

Now, two councilmen are promoting ``inclusionary zoning'' for our city. That kind of scheme has been proved to produce less affordable (and other) housing where tried, while depressing San Francisco Bay Area “Bay Area” redirects here. For other uses, see Bay Area (disambiguation).

Cindy center

Re ``Tipoff'' (July 26):

I, for one, am sick and tired of changing our street and park names to satisfy the Hispanic influence. Now they want to name the new community center in Van Nuys after Cesar Chavez Noun 1. Cesar Chavez - United States labor leader who organized farm workers (born 1927)
Cesar Estrada Chavez, Chavez
, who had nothing to do with it.

- Jim Rowe Jim Rowe (born 1978) was the 2006 Republican nominee for State Senator in Illinois' 39th against Democratic incumbent Don Harmon but received less than 30% of the vote against Harmon in 2006. On May 15, 2007 he annouced he would challange incumbent Senator Dick Durbin in 2008.

Nonpartisan

Mayor James Hahn's dad must be turning over in his grave. Here's our mayor running for re-election in a nonpartisan election, and he goes to the National Democratic Convention and lends his support to the candidacy of Sen.  are focusing on Kerry's heroic military record to persuade us to vote for him. Edwards stated we need a ``decisive and strong leader'' with a military background to become commander in chief. Huh? You mean like Bill Clinton? I assume if they, the Democrats, truly believe this, they must have voted for Bush 41 (World War II Navy pilot) in '92 and again for Bob Dole (World War II combat-wounded veteran) in '96. What hypocrisy.

Also, how many people are aware that Kerry was only ``in country'' for four months (the rest of us at least 12), earning three Purple Hearts Purple Hearts can refer to the following:
  • Purple Heart, the U.S. service award
  • Purple Hearts (UK band), the British mod revival group active in the 1970s and 1980s
  • Purple Hearts (Australian band), active from 1964 to 1967

Never again

Sen. John Edwards' speech about ``the politics of hope'' was real deja vu, revisiting the snake oil that I and so many others swallowed from Clinton and Gore in 1992, but never again. Americans don't get hope from phony politicians but from our great nation and Constitution, at least until John Kerry and the ACLU ACLU: see American Civil Liberties Union.  get through with them.

I'd like to hope the Democratic Party of FDR, Adlai Stevenson, JFK and Hubert Humphrey will re-emerge to replace today's charlatans. That seems hopeless when you look at the people who've been given the new places of honor.

No excuse

Re ``Cheney's example'' (Your Opinions, July 28):

In response to Zachary Charles' letter on Dick Cheney, his language was not the ``only kind of language right-wingers understand.'' In fact, I'm sure many right-wingers would disagree with the usage of the ``f'' word. There is no excuse in that Cheney probably used it more out of frustration - but to not apologize for such usage shows man's pride.

As for Teresa Heinz Kerry's ``shove it'' remark, everyone knows what it clearly meant and that her pride too was evident. Both sides are at fault when it comes to dealing with political frustration in a proper context and one that does not degrade the sensibilities of those present.

Kerry's failure

It's been reported that the 9-11 commission found that, in addition to other agencies' foul-ups, Congress failed miserably in its oversight responsibility toward the intelligence community. But wait. Sen John Kerry sat on the Senate Intelligence Committee. He was there long before Bush was elected. So 'splain to me again why he'd do a better job against terror.

Show their cards

On Tuesday, Dick Cheney preached to the choir, 2,500 dressed-out Marines at Camp Pendleton, Calif. I quote: ``Sixteen months ago, Iraq was a gathering threat to the United States ...''

At no time since the decision was made to unilaterally invade an unarmed country has the administration supported that contention with true, verifiable facts. Its time for Rummy rummy, card game played by two to six players with a standard deck. The cards usually rank from king down through ace. Seven cards are dealt to each player in the three- or four-hand game, one card is turned up on the table, and the remaining cards are left face down , Karl, Andy and Dick to show the American people their cards. Do they have a winning hand, or no two of a kind?

Teresa Heinz Kerry

It surprised me that Teresa Heinz Kerry's speech at the Democratic convention was not as well received by the masses. I thought she was such a refreshing change from what we have now. This woman is undoubtedly urban, European and just may have more to contribute to this grand country than what is now thought.

We all should ask ourselves: Why is it usually the slightly odd that are so oftentimes perceived as too different for us to behold? To me, her temperament reminds me of Jackie O.

It is interesting how politics evolve in this country. Now a socialist, in a suit, is called a Democrat, and a fascist, in a suit, is called a Republican.
