Our loss is greater because today's Hollywood has few patriots who understand what made and makes American great. Hope did and he didn't just make jokes about it; he lived his love for America, her causes and our military on and off the stage. It was no act.

Bob Hope was a star. Hie life, his fidelity, his integrity will remain head and shoulders above the majority of current Hollywood. God bless Bob and comfort his family. I will miss his presence.

Fitting headline

With the passing of Bob Hope and all he's done in the past for our troops, it only seems fitting that someone's headline should read: ``There is no Hope for Iraq.''

Re ``Freeway plan revived'' (July 28):

I lived in the Valley most of my life. I remember when the Ventura and the San Diego freeways The San Diego Freeway (Interstate 405, and the part of Interstate 5 south of the El Toro Y[1]) is one of the principal north-south highways in Southern California, and the major beltway of I-5 running through Southern California. , etc., were being designed and built. One thing that seems to be overlooked now versus then was the thought of where best to put a freeway. When the plan was passed, eminent domain eminent domain, the right of a government to force the owner of private property sell it if it is needed for a public use. The right is based on the doctrine that a sovereign state has dominion over all lands and buildings within its borders, which has its origins in  came into place when all other negotiations failed. Many homes and businesses were swallowed up.

It seems as though the time has come for the politicians to bite the bullet and face up to the music. Improving the 101 will necessitate the taking of more homes, business, etc. Not a pretty sight or thought, but in society, the majority will prevail. Twenty-five years of wrangling, homeowner association threats, screams by well-meaning homeowners will have to be trodden trod·den

Neighborhood Council

Re ``City rejects local council for Northridge'' (July 23):

It was astonishing a·ston·ish
tr.v. as·ton·ished, as·ton·ish·ing, as·ton·ish·es
To fill with sudden wonder or amazement. See Synonyms at surprise.
to learn of City Hall rubber-stamping the Departmentof Neighborhood Empowerment outrage for Northridge residents. What happened to the city councilman for Northridge? For over two years, Winnetka residents have pursued neighborhood council certification as set out by DONE. A recent hearing by the commissioners of DONE established a set of certification criteria that appeared to be most subjective.

City Councilman Dennis Zine and a key staff person attended this hearingat Sutter Middle School. In the interest of fair play and objectivity, his office encouraged our community to meet certification criteria set out by DONE bureaucrats and commissioners. I would expect that Winnetka residents will fare better from the City Council.

Kobe Bryant Kobe Bean Bryant (born July 23 1978(1978--)) is an American All-Star shooting guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers.  is a basketball player - nothing more, nothing less. The fact that he commands a ridiculous and unwarranted salary for throwing a ball through a basket does not make him a celebrity. But because of this so-called celebrity and because he has the money, this young lady will have her whole life laid out before the entire country. She may have been foolish but she does not deserve the tar brushing she will probably receive from the attorneys and the press.

Forgive and forget

Bill O'Reilly's July 27 Viewpoint commentary on the Bush administration's policy on Iraq was correct in most of his assumptions except for one paragraph where he says ``The president needs to send more soldiers and convince some of our allies to help.'' He only mentions Russia and neglects to include France and Germany in his inclusion of allies.

Bill, get over it! Even though we might disagree with Verb 1. disagree with - not be very easily digestible; "Spicy food disagrees with some people"
hurt - give trouble or pain to; "This exercise will hurt your back"
our allies on certain issues, that's certainly no reason to alienate To voluntarily convey or transfer title to real property by gift, disposition by will or the laws of Descent and Distribution, or by sale.

For example, a seller may alienate property by transferring to a buyer a parcel of the seller's land containing a house, in
former allies. Good friends forgive and forget over disagreements, and now we need all the help we can get, which includes military and monetary means from our friends, which include Germany and France.

War is terrible and ugly

I would like to respond to the many letters I have seen over the last several months from people writing in telling us how offensive they find the pictures of the horror of war. This is war, terrible and ugly. If the media were less ``embedded with the troops,'' and more committed to covering the story, we'd be seeing detailed footage of this ugliness for long periods of time. And for those who claim to support the troops, we should be seeing what our troops are forced to see and do every day.

We need to experience the ugliness of war. So before we tell each other what great patriots we are, remember: If we can ``rah-rah'' this war, then we can damn well look at it until it's over - and paid off.

It was sarcasm, folks

Re ``Young drivers (Your Opinions, July 22) and ``The mind-set'' (Your Opinions, July 25):

I thought my intent was clear by recommending we ban ``all large cars and all small concealable cars.'' I was trying to show the absurdity of blaming any group (elderly drivers or gun owners) for the actions of one individual.

The statement I used concerning saving the life of one innocent child is what the Brady anti-gun group uses whenever there is a gun tragedy and it demands new laws New Laws: see Las Casas, Bartolomé de.  to ban more guns, test owners and raise taxes. I was trying to show in perspective the tactics anti-gun groups use whenever there is a gun tragedy and how foolish they really are. I did not really mean all drivers over 70 should be banned; I was trying to make a point using sarcasm.
