PUBLIC FORUM : SMOKING INSPECTORS.The city has funded two inspectors at a cost of $250,000 to enforce the law against smoking in bars and restaurants. If they work together eight hours a day, five days a week, and spend 10 minutes per establishment, they will cover 240 sites a week. At that rate, it will take approximately 2-1/2 years to cover each of the 3,000 facilities in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . I would like someone at City Hall to explain why the inspectors cannot work independently to provide somewhat greater coverage. Also, I am curious about any special training required for this position. Does the $125,000 per inspector include medical and pension benefits as well as a car? Where can someone go to apply for the position?? - Bruce Feitelberg Tarzana Losing choice How have we become complacent enough over the years to allow big government to control our lives? For the most part, these same establishments divided sections for smokers and nonsmokers and, in many cases, increased their air-flow capacity. Employees could choose their respective section. Now that we seem to have the puritanical and liberal faction of government in control, we are losing what these factions despise the most: choice and free enterprise. I hope that each smoker or establishment operator fined for breaching the smoking ban pulls together, unites and opts for the minimal jail time so as to flood our courts with this ridiculous, futile law. - Louis Thompson Woodland Hills Take the smoke outside Regarding what we hope will be enforcement of the righteous ban on smoking in bars: It is good to hear that the very righteous law, prohibiting smoking in bars, is finally being enforced, although enforcement is still underfunded un·der·fund tr.v. un·der·fund·ed, un·der·fund·ing, un·der·funds To provide insufficient funding for. underfunded adj → infradotado (económicamente) and the health department would be a more logical choice than the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. If accurate surveys were to be taken, most Californians are nonsmokers; therefore, it will eventually help the bar business, just as it did the restaurant industry, to respect the air that others must breathe and to take the smoke outside. - Howard Raymond Hollywood No adjective conservative A compassionate, conservative Bush sounds a lot like a kinder, gentler Bush; doesn't it? A few women espousing liberal ideas have improved their situation at a great cost to the mass of women, mothers and girls. Middle-class families are being torn apart by the increasing need for both parents to work. For a family earning $35,000 a year, our deceptive tax structure - including federal income taxes, state income taxes, sales taxes and other taxes - requires the equivalent of a full salary of one spouse. - E.R. Rootin' tootin' Si admitted to the world that he blasted his trusty shootin' iron into the air to break up confrontations. I have a few questions. Since Frumkin admitted that he carried the firearm with him, does he have a carry permit? Did he hit anything? Unless Newton's law Noun 1. Those bullets he blasted into the air landed somewhere. Where, oh where, did they land? Is Frumkin aware that firing a weapon into the air in Los Angeles city limits is a crime? Does Frumkin really believe, as he stated, that reporting these incidents to the local police is pointless? - Michael Manning Van Nuys Huge step backward Regarding ``Women's health Women's Health Definition Women's health is the effect of gender on disease and health that encompasses a broad range of biological and psychosocial issues. too often viewed only in reproductive terms'' (Viewpoint, July 25): I fear that having a so-called women's specialty would be a huge step backward - to a general practitioner general practitioner n. Fleisher II, M.D. Northridge Disciplining children Re ``Damned if you do'' (Public Forum, July 26): The writer says that, as he understands the law, parents have no right to discipline their children. He then laments that if only spanking spanking Pediatrics Corporal punishment, usually of children, in which the buttocks, are pummeled, swatted, or otherwise struck. When exactly were those times - the radical '60s, the drug-filled '70s, the selfish '80s, etc.? I don't believe that spanking your child is illegal, although it certainly should be. But the worst thing in his letter is the suggestion that any person who is against hitting children is also against disciplining children. Discipline has nothing whatsoever to do with hitting or punishing. Disciplining means teaching - modeling the behavior that you would like to see your child exhibit as your disciple. That to me is discipline. You know that old spare-the-rod saying? The thinking was that, if a dog is caught by the dog catcher, the owner could be identified and the dog returned, instead of being put to sleep. The license fee, like all license fees, was to cover the cost of the program and only the cost of the program. Now big nanny wants to control behavior through the implementation of penalty fees. The simple solution is to make people who let their dogs have puppies license them all upon birth. That way, everybody pays the same for a license, but the people who are actually responsible for the problem pay more.
