PUBLIC FORUM : ROBBERY, SANS GUN.

Southern Californians are very upset with the sudden, drastic and unexplained price rise in the cost of gasoline at the pumps. Several recent letters aptly point out our lack of comprehension and dismay when refueling the gas buggy. Let me pour a little more fuel on the fire.

A conversation with a most reliable friend on the East Coast ruined my day, as I learned the prices of gasoline back in the Garden State. Accordingly, I asked him to run a survey of his local area. He checked a large cross-section of prices covering many pumps of eight different major retail distributors. The matrix of 50 samplings is averaged out as: regular, 94 cents; midgrade, $1.09; hi-test, $1.13

To add insult to injury, New Jersey does not allow self-service. These prices are all full serve. Our California distributors do not need to worry about gun laws. They are holding us up without the need for firearms.

Good ol' gas

In the '50s, I worked for Royce's Texaco station (corner of Brand and Laurel Canyon Laurel Canyon can refer to several things:

  • Laurel Canyon Boulevard, a street that connects the San Fernando Valley to Hollywood that passes through Laurel Canyon
). There were only two grades of gasoline: regular and ethyl ethyl (ĕth`əl), CH3CH2, organic free radical or alkyl group derived from ethane by removing one hydrogen atom. . The cars ran great. With the computer modules in newer cars, they adjust the engine for gas flow and octane levels. Few think we could again cut back to only 2 grades of gasoline - 88 and 92 octane.

Just think, the oil refineries This is a list of oil refineries. The Oil and Gas Journal also publishes a worldwide list of refineries annually in a country-by-country tabulation that includes for each refinery: location, crude oil daily processing capacity, and the size of each process unit in the refinery.  and storage tanks could be cut back by one-third! And perhaps we could have lower prices, such as they have on the East Coast. As a side note, I still have a few cars from the '40s and '50s, and they run fine on the lower octane grade

Compare the prices

We should compare the price of gasoline with other items of mass consumption, such as a cup of coffee for $1.35, plus 11 cents sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  and tip; a glass of wine in a restaurant for $3.50-$5 plus 28 cents to 40 cents tax plus tip. People stand in line to spend $4 plus tax for coffee in specialty shops. Yet, gasoline is considered too expensive at 90 cents per gallon (less taxes). Some movie tickets are now $8.50 - no problem. And many people must have bottled tap water regardless of the price.

Armed resistance

Gary D. Cunial ridicules the idea that privately held weapons could serve as a deterrent to a ``trained, organized, and heavily armed military force'' (Public Forum, April 12).

Perhaps Cunial should review recent history, under the heading ``Afghanistan.'' There, poorly organized guerrillas defeated the ``trained, organized and heavily armed'' military of the Soviet Union This article or section may be confusing or unclear for some readers.

Bond blunder

Its a great day in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . The voters saw through the bull that the politicians were feeding us and voted down another ``bureaucratic blunder'' - Proposition 1.

Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  and his valiant efforts to graze off of us hardworking taxpayers failed in part because the people of Los Angeles cannot and will not believe their lies any longer. Just look back to the other bond measure, Proposition BB and the blunder at Belmont High, or look to lavish training facilities that were constructed well over budget in the Northeast San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Blair vowed, when he was elected, to rid England of all handguns. Law-abiding English citizens, who legally owned handguns and were not criminals, were demonized by Blair and in turn were ordered by law to surrender their legal property.

It is ironic that Blair wants his fellow citizens to come to the aid of Albanians, who were disarmed by their own government with laws similar to what Blair promotes. The adage ``people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones'' certainly applies to Blair and his ilk.

While you're at it

We have just received the second letter from the Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles. . Chief Bamattre wants to personally apologize. Good idea, chief. You can personally contact us at home, but please phone before you call personally. While you are here you might explain, Why are we on your list? We do not live in the mountains or on a hillside. How did you get the authority to bill taxpayers for services that should really be in your charter? Why were you not minding the store Minding the Store is a 2005 reality TV show starring Pauly Shore. The show is based around Shore trying to revitalize his acting career and run the family business, The Comedy Store.  when that first letter went out to us?

How much did that first letter and your second letter cost us anyway? Come to think about it, while you are here personally apologizing you could also perform the inspection that you seem to think is necessary and save that much cost.

Newhall Ranch approval

Your editorial concerning the Board of Supervisors's recent approval of Newhall Ranch, failed to acknowledge the many requirements placed upon the developer to address the very issues you questioned. These requirements were developed as part of my face-to-face meetings held with Ventura County officials, as well as the city of Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  leaders.

The board's action does not permit the construction of any homes, nor does it permit any extensive grading. Rather, as a specific plan, it simply sets a context for future public hearings of specific subdivision maps and other related permits.

The county conditioned the developer to participate in funding interchange improvements at state Highway 126, Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard. In addition, the value of the other transit-related requirements - such as bus turnouts, bikeways and off-site highway widening projects - that are mandated by the County Congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

Management Plan, exceeded by 50 percent his requirements.

Water supply was perhaps the most serious of the issues raised at the public hearings. I, too, shared that concern, because downstream farmers in the Santa Clara River Santa Clara River may refer to:

  • Santa Clara River (Utah), a river in Utah, United States
  • Carmen River, a river in Mexico that is sometimes called the Santa Clara River
depend upon adequate supplies. The local water agencies believe that adequate supplies will be available to serve this development, as well as the others approved in recent years. Nonetheless, the board, at my direction, added a number of conditions to respond to these concerns. The most important of the conditions, requires the applicant, at the time he files his subdivision application, to disclose the specific source of supply.

The developer has signed school mitigation agreements that are among the most generous ever negotiated in the history of the state of California. To protect Ventura County farmers, the board required the developer to provide a half-mile-wide buffer between the development and the Ventura County line south of Highway 126.

You failed to mention that approval of the development requires the applicant to dedicate a new regional park for the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. . Contrary to your comment, the county of Los Angeles long ago abandoned using ``1950s-era'' planning techniques.

Political day

Regarding Mayor Richard Riordan's plan for a Dia de los Ninos: What an absolute joke. We have plenty of forced time off as it is with holidays, birthdays, pupil-free days, summer vacation, etc. That's plenty of time to celebrate with our children. We don't need any more, especially for political reasons.

Wrong treaty

Re ``Valuable landmark'' (Public Forum, April 7):

I would like to correct Kathleen Nicholson from the San Fernando Historical Society. The signing of the treaty between Gen. Andres Pico and Lt. Col. Fremont only ended the fighting between Mexican and American forces in California.

Mexico relinquished its rights to the Western states by the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hildago in 1848. I also believe, as she does, that the Campo de Cahuenga Campo de Cahuenga in North Hollywood, California, near Cahuenga Pass, was an adobe farmhouse on the Rancho Verdugo where the Treaty of Cahuenga was signed between Lieutenant Colonel John C.  should be preserved as it is, so that all Californians can remember its historical value to our society.

Campo de Cahuenga

``Traffic battle erupts at the historical treat site'' (Daily News, March 12), by Douglas Haberman, covers many of our concerns about these historic building foundations.

Part of our long-term goal is to reconstruct the historic Don Tomas Feliz Adobe up to the sidewalk property line - half of the total building will now be out in Lankershim Boulevard. If widening is done on the Universal Studios side, then three-quarters of the original adobe can be preserved and reconstructed.

Our other concern is that once the original foundations are covered by tons of concrete, we will never in a billion years see them again, and they will be in reality gone forever but protected in their eyes.
