As the Taiwanese assert their right to self-determination (to which they have a far greater right than the Kosovars), it is time America stands behind our longtime ally and stands up to the bully we have created in communist China.

Can't afford NFL NFL

National Football League

NFL (US) n abbr (= National Football League) → Fußball-Nationalliga

I am opposed to bringing a professional football team to the city of L.A. at the prices they are talking about. Around $1 billion and the taxpayers are paying a portion of this. All of this money for how many home games?

The average person cannot afford to go to the games. I would rather see any extra money the state might have go to open up some of our park and beach facilities that have been shut down due to a shortage of funds. Or pump the money into collegiate sports such as football at CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge .

Against war crimes

The International Criminal Tribunal of Yugoslavia has an indictment for Bill Clinton for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The International Ethical Alliance is prosecuting Clinton for ordering the military to participate in a nondefensive aggressive attack on Yugoslavia.

Nondefensive aggressive wars, as defined in the Charter of International Military Tribunal A military tribunal is a kind of military court designed to try members of enemy forces during wartime, operating outside the scope of conventional criminal and civil matters. High-speed train

Re ``Smart rail'' (Editorial, July 23):

Thank you for your editorial titled ``Smart rail.'' The Daily News has been a champion for the addition of a high-speed rail line through the Antelope Valley and for the development of an airport in Palmdale for some time. Both moves would greatly enhance the economy of the Antelope Valley, while providing numerous benefits to the entire Southern California region.

As a point of clarification, however, acting under the leadership of authority members Jerry Epstein and Donna Andrews, both from Los Angeles, authority members did specifically direct their staff to once again add the Antelope Valley alignment to the state plan. Both the Antelope Valley alignment, now designated as the ``A'' alignment, and the Grapevine alignment, now designated as the ``B'' alignment, will be studied.

We certainly share the Daily News' confidence that the study results will clearly favor the High Desert route.

Warehousing the elderly

Re ``Warehousing our elderly an injustice against society'' (Opinions, July 28):

While Congress may not have considered some of the larger issues of how badly society - and some nursing homes - treat their elderly, the United Nations has. In 1991, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the following as part of its Principles for Older Persons: Older persons should be able to live in dignity and security and be free of exploitation and physical or mental abuse.

Older persons should have access to health care to help them maintain or regain the optimum level of physical, mental and emotional well-being and to prevent or delay the onset of illness.

It's important to understand that the overall quality of life and health of society depends on all generations working together and respecting each other.
