PUBLIC FORUM : MOMENT OF SILENCE.

While watching the television news coverage of the bombing of Yugoslavia There were two aerial bombings of Yugoslavia in history.
  • Bombing of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia during the April 1941 Invasion of Yugoslavia.
  • Bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the 1999 Operation Allied Force.
, it is easy to look at it as just another movie. But these are real people being killed every day.

The one positive result of the Balkan war is that it has driven traditional political rivals together in search of a peaceful solution to the situation in Yugoslavia.

Libertarians, liberals and conservatives who oppose the war have joined together to call for a moment of silence to be observed on the two-month anniversary of the NATO NATO: see North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Look before you judge

In America, we learn that all men and women are created equal, yet in this country, Native Americans were ethnically cleansed from their homeland. In the United States, we don't discriminate, but 40 years ago, there were separate drinking fountains for African-Americans. In America, we are democratic, but here women couldn't vote until the 20th century. America's the sweet land of liberty, yet not long ago, we took Japanese Americans The following is a list of famous Japanese Americans who have made significant contributions to the United States, or have appeared in the news numerous times:

Should America really be judging another country?

Two wrongs, no right

The April Congressional Research Service The Congressional Research Service (CRS) is a branch of the Library of Congress that provides objective, nonpartisan research, analysis, and information to assist Congress in its legislative, oversight, and representative functions. U.S.  reports on Kosovo that ``ethnic-purification'' pressures by nationalist ethnic-Albanians in Kosovo against the Serbian minority there may have been one reason why the Serb population in Kosovo dropped from 35 percent in 1948 to less than 10 percent. Of course, two wrongs don't make a right, but neither then does the continuing NATO carpet-bombing of Belgrade and elsewhere in Serbia make up for its ill-conceived, truncated negotiations' ultimatums either.

Execution poll

Re Reader survey of death penalty (Daily News, May 17):

More than 1,100 readers responded to your telephone question of the day, with 97 percent saying ``increase the pace of Death Row executions.'' Perhaps if the question were changed a little, the response might be different. Example: ``Would you be in favor of life in prison without parole, instead of the death sentence?'' Trimmed by brush fee

My understanding is that neither the L.A. Where does my annual share of $25.36 go?

Supports brush fee

I am in total support of the $13 fee for the inspection of possibly needed brush clearance. Our fire stations are understaffed and overqualified o·ver·qual·i·fied

to check our properties and yards. Sad enough, an inspection is needed because some of us are careless and ignorant and close our eyes to problems that could affect not only us but our neighbors as well. The fee of $13 is a small investment with a huge payoff for the inspection of potentially hazardous growth on certain designated properties.

Aside from the safety factor, brush clearance also might enhance the look of some neighborhoods.

Conservancy's fire safety

My ember-scorched Nomex fire jacket attests to the two Malibu fires I have personally fought - along with every other ranger of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open  - and I must say that the most important thing to all of us is the safety of visitors and residents in the Santa Monica Mountains The Santa Monica Mountains are a low transverse range in southern California in the United States. Geography
They run for approximately 40 mi (64 km) east-west from the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles to Point Mugu in Ventura County.
.

Your May 14 editorial is wrong on its facts, and most importantly, is wrong on its emotions.

The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is all about providing a safe and secure environment for all Southern Californians to enjoy nature in their back yards. Fire is an ever-present threat and must be zealously guarded against. Day in and day out Adv. 1. day in and day out - without respite; "he plays chess day in and day out"

, our rangers and field workers cut the brush and clear fire safety zones under the hot sun and in poison oak-infested chaparral, and they deserve better from the glib editorial writers of the Daily News cozened in their air-conditioned offices taking potshots at them.

The whole premise of your editorial was that city taxpayers put up $82,000 for brush clearance and the Conservancy didn't do it. Wrong. The City Council voted down the $82,000 proposal from Councilman Mike Feuer. Twice the Conservancy has asked Sacramento for funds to remove brush around structures beyond the 100 feet required by state law so as to voluntarily comply with the new city ordinance. Last year and the year before the Wilson administration turned down this request. We can't spend money we don't have.

Don't blame Star Wars

Re Bob Strauss' article ``Is Lucas making our kids violent?'' (Daily News, May 16): The need for political leaders and the media to find a scapegoat for the incident in Columbine columbine, in botany

is sickening. The need to attack the mass murder of innocents and villains in a film that is based on a mythological galaxy demonstrates the lack of common sense by the American public.

Historically, we, as a species, have been very violent to anything that goes against our own principle values. In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke"
put differently
, we are selfish. For example, the NATO alliance is now engaged in a battle with Kosovo, not because of the refugees, but because of our self-interest to keep the region from starting another world war.

Strauss wrote his article on the influence of violence from ``Star Wars,'' because it involves the two most important national stories of the month. Within certain circles, he has noticed that the film has transformed into a mythological religion. Strauss finds it easier to dissect dissect /dis·sect/ (di-sekt´) (di-sekt´)

2. to expose structures of a cadaver for anatomical study.

Airport games

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport, airlines and politicians are playing the same game they played in 1976 when they wanted to take over the airport from Lockheed-Martin.

The strategy was to build up support for getting the airport (now the new terminal); talk about the urgent need for preservation (now safety); promise to be a good neighbor; promise future legislation. Above all else, never make concessions that would inconvenience or restrict the airlines.

The airline industry put one over on Congress when it labeled the Airport Noise and Capacity Act. Instead of setting up rules to curtail noise, it guaranteed the airlines could enlarge their fleet and increase operations.

The airlines convinced everyone that Stage-3 aircraft are quiet. They aren't.

Residents of Burbank know from past experience, if the airport gets what it wants now, there will be no concessions later. No deal.

Pass on Adventure Pass

In the May 2 Daily News Viewpoint, Michael J. Rogers, Angeles Nation Forest supervisor, makes a case for continued implementation of the Adventure Pass.

He states that the ``Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  is the most heavily used federally administered public land in the nation.'' And by my observation, it is the most poorly administered public land in the nation.

On the April 17 hike in the Angeles, I encountered the following situation. The plumbing system at Red Box Canyon is broken. Buckhorn buck·horn
n.
1. The horn of a buck.

2. The material of such a horn, used especially to make handles for knives and tools.
Campground and other surrounding campgrounds in the Chilao area, closed; the concessionaire is out of business. For over 20 years, the majority of trail maintenance in the Angeles has been done by volunteers. Volunteers work the kiosks, selling Adventure Passes. Volunteers also work at other visitor centers around the Angeles.

Adventure Pass money is being used to offset budget cuts, rather than providing an additional source of revenue to improve the Angeles. The condition of the Angeles is worse now than it was prior to the implementation of the Adventure Pass.

We the taxpayers should be getting what we paid for from Washington without having to resort to begging and crawling.
