PUBLIC FORUM : KILLING OF BEAR BY GIRL, 9, ANGERS READERS.Re ``Virginia girl, 9, hunts down and slays bear'' (Daily News, Dec. 5): Shooting a bear out of a tree is hardly newsworthy even if the hunter is a 9-year-old girl. Here's how it is done: Turn dogs loose where bears might have traveled. Listen to dogs barking. The dogs have four stages of barking. Stage one is when they have a scent and are following it. Stage two is when they actually have the bear in sight and are chasing it "Chasing It" is the eighty-first episode of the HBO original series, The Sopranos, and the fourth episode of the second half of the show's sixth season. The episode was written by Matthew Weiner and was directed by Tim Van Patten. . Stage three is when the bear is cornered and defending itself, and finally, stage four, when the bear has no other choice but to climb a tree to get away from the annoying dogs. The hunter can tell by the way the dogs are barking exactly what stage they are at. Now all he or she has to do is find the dogs. The bear is up the tree, 10 to 20 feet, depending on the size of the tree, most likely looking down at all of the commotion. At this stage of the hunt the hunter sights in on a point between the bear's front paws where the heart is and pulls the trigger. - Peter G. I wonder if a thought of possibly orphaned cubs crossed the mind of this little animal killer? Probably not. And so, while we are trying to help wildlife survive in their ridiculously limited territories, some people are bringing up a generation of future nature destructors. - Gino Hasler Arleta I was disgusted reading about the 9-year-old Virginia girl being thrilled about killing a bear. It's incredibly sad to me that children would be taught to glory in killing a living being. It's also sad that you would choose to report this in the News Lite section as if it was a lighthearted funny event. - Pam Konyk Van Nuys Remember that young boy's dying wish to the Make-A-Wish Foundation The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that grants wishes to children (2.5 years to 18 years old) with life-threatening medical conditions. to go to Alaska to kill a Kodiak bear? Unified School District's accounting, auditing and budget departments have shown in planning their holiday gala, devoting hundreds of hours to the task on taxpayers' time, has given me an idea. Why not harness this energy for the greater good of the school district? Now that we know what motivates these downtown bureaucrats, it's a simple matter to get them to do their jobs. I propose these fun-loving bean counters should be given party incentives for keeping tabs on the district's money. How about for every thousand dollars saved, we chip in a few bucks toward a deposit on a swank hotel banquet hall Definition A banquet hall is a room used for social gatherings like receptions, reunions, parties, and business events. ? I'm sure my plan would give LAUSD Chief Financial Officer Henry Jones' party animals reason to really apply themselves. As it is, the knowledge that trimming LAUSD budget fat means freeing funds for resources that directly aid the education of L.A. kids does not light a fire under these folks. This is all the more reason we should pass 95/5, the California Educational Efficiency Initiative next June. Then, to top it off, the district's attorney, Howard Friedman, has the audacity to compare the party to similar situations in the private sector. Wrong, Mr. Friedman. The private sector does not spend taxpayers' money to plan and stage the office Christmas party. Every single member of the board should be held accountable for this insensitive and self-serving behavior. - Harlan Campbell Tujunga This is in response to Carolyn Whitehead's letter of Dec. 7 (``LAUSD party time''). I'm a retired LAUSD employee with 25 years of service. I have to agree with Whitehead's position. Nevertheless, there are other elements to this story that are troublesome. First, this Christmas party planning scam involves the district's financial division. These people had to charge more than 1,000 hours of overtime to get basic work done. Then we come to find out that they have spent seven months planning this party. This is an outrage, not to mention poor planning. Who takes seven months to plan a Christmas party? The most disturbing part of the story is the apparent shakedown of local businesses to help finance the deal. Between the LAUSD and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, it's any wonder that the taxpayers have any money left. - James P.
