A sucker's play

Now we can believe that Clinton shouldn't have been elected. George Stephanopoulos has told us (``Ex-Clinton aide whines,'' Opinions, March 16). When he worked for Bill, it was George this, George that, let George do it.

Isn't it funny how George was Clinton's man Friday, but not until he leaves the White House does he realize his president was a lying creep. Of course money might be an incentive. Money has worked for so many of Clinton's confederates. (Democrats - huh!)

I guess when Hillary finally dumps her man, we can expect her book on how she was deceived. That should be worth millions.

P.T. Barnum had it right, ``There's a sucker born every minute This article or section may contain original research or unverified claims.

Send signs

I second the letter from Elaine Franco (Public Forum, March 5).

Our streets are always so full of cars that when the street cleaners come - which isn't often - they only clean the middle of our streets.

Please, all you people who don't want your signs, send them to Arleta.

U.S. is supreme power

Don't these wild-eyed conservatives and their gung-ho war-mongering friends realize that our hard-earned tax dollars have built, nurtured and maintained the mightiest military machine the world has ever known? Since the demise of the Soviet Union, the military United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. Who's left to challenge us?

The U.S. Navy is supreme. The world's oceans have become American lakes.

The U.S. Air Force is supreme. The world's air space has become American air space.

And finally, the United States is protected and secured by thousands of nuclear-tipped missiles, alerted and targeted at every adversary or potential adversary around the world.

Veterans deserve break

The service people who fought for this country deserve a break. Any military person 70 years or older should not have to pay taxes. I don't think this is asking too much, considering what we did for the country.

I served my country from 1940 to 1960. I was at sea on Dec. 7, 1941. I didn't come home until June 1944. I was home again for 56 days and then at sea again. This continued until the war ended. My two sons served in the Navy, one was with the SEALs. Between the three of us, we have served our country 53 years.

You give children a tax-free savings account Savings Account

A deposit account intended for funds that are expected to stay in for the short term. A savings account offers lower returns than the market rates.

Notes:
; you should go to the high schools and see what those children are driving. You are actually giving the parents the discount and once again, to the rich. Why not give it to someone who deserves it? No one deserves it more than someone in the military who fought for this country and not to someone who never will.

It would be nice if Congress would actually remember those of us who were willing to lay our lives down for this country. Congress goes out on Memorial Day to thank us. At the same time they are cutting VA hospitals and military retirement benefits. So many things were promised to us before World War II even started.

I hope you will consider my request and give back to those men and women who did so much for this country and deserve a break.

Intrusive politics

The Republican Party has always stood for less government, rather than more, and less management of Americans' personal lives. Yet, their position on abortion represents the most intrusive management of a woman's life imaginable.

The Republicans want to return to ``family values,'' but with the conservative religious right in control, the GOP will continue to move further and further from mainstream America. Politics and religion are a dangerous mixture, which will only please the moral majority who continue to believe that homosexuality is evil and anti-Christian.

The majority of those who oppose abortion do so on religious grounds, and they are entitled to their beliefs. But support or enforcement of that belief by a political party is endorsing a religious dogma and that has no place in our form of government.

We cannot have a party or a president, whose actions and decisions are not in the best interest of all America. If the GOP really believes in less government and more self-determination, let them show it by addressing the problems of running the country and not running its citizens' lives.

Hypocrite Hyde

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Henry Hyde, the impeachment impeachment, formal accusation issued by a legislature against a public official charged with crime or other serious misconduct. In a looser sense the term is sometimes applied also to the trial by the legislature that may follow.  leader famous for his ``youthful indiscretion'' - when he was in his 40s - during an interview with the National Review criticized former Arkansas Sen. Dale Bumper's World War II military service.

Hyde charged ``that he (Bumpers) never fired a shot in anger.''

I am a volunteer World War II veteran with approximately four years of active duty service. I do not remember ever firing a shot in anger.

By the way, Henry, in his spiteful attack on Bumpers, never mentioned his (Hyde's) contribution to our county's World War II victory. Is there a point here, Henry?

The veggie defense

Why would anyone, in our modern day and age, choose to adopt a vegetarian diet? Perhaps these people simply choose not to support the pain and suffering that is part of a farm animal's everyday life.

Maybe vegetarians object to the waste involved in producing animal products, realizing that a large amount of plant protein, that could have been fed to humans, yields only a small amount of animal protein. Or perhaps vegetarians just care enough about their bodies to fuel them with healthy, pure foods, not having to worry about how much fat, poisons, preservatives preservatives,

Butchering the label

Do you think McDonald's should put the following label on every hamburger? ``Warning: The meat in this hamburger was obtained from cattle slaughtered by being hung upside down and having their skulls bashed in with a sledgehammer See Opteron.  and then having their heads removed with a chain saw.''

The same label could be attached to your shoes, if made of leather, your steaks in the market, and any number of other beef products.

Finally we have a state assemblyman who understands and is becoming an advocate for the people. Assemblyman Tom McClintock's introduction of a plan to dedicate the state's share of sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. As Christians we are admonished to pay our taxes and honor those who govern us. Tom is making it easier to obey.

I am grateful to be represented by McClintock, (who represents the 38th Assembly District). May his tribe increase.

Pet food tax

Re ``Tax Pet Food'' (Public Forum, March 10) from Charlene T. Vincent:

Vincent neglected to mention that pet food is taxed by the state. A tax such as the one she is referring to is ludicrous and a waste of effort and precious time on behalf of the city. It sounds as if she is displacing her anger from her bad experience at a city park with unleashed dogs and their owner. Choose your battles carefully, Charlene.
