PUBLIC FORUM : FOLLOW-UPS NEEDED AS FIRE OFFICIALS SEEK TO EDUCATE BARGOERS, OWNERS ON BAN.My organization is very pleased that the Fire Department has visited 81 bars since the first week in July and provided education about the smoke-free bar law. Our suggestion is that Fire Department personnel now revisit those 81 bars to see if the education has worked. If it hasn't, then it is certainly time to start issuing citations. This law is no different. But citations, which are just like traffic tickets, should not just be issued to bar patrons. They should also be issued to bar owners. The Fire Department is the right agency for enforcing this law. This is an organization whose primary mission is saving lives, which is what they are doing when they get owners and patrons to comply with the law. - Esther Schiller Executive Secretary Smokefree Air for Everyone Newbury Park Why have we sheepishly sheep·ish adj. 1. Or maybe perfume and deodorants that may offend the majority of people? We need to repeal Proposition 10, the voter initiative that imposed a 50-cent tax on packs of cigarettes to pay for county-run health programs. We do not need Big Brother or Big Sister controlling our habits. - Louis Rosenberg Canoga Park I have a great problem with people who feel that they can go into a bar and still smoke, even though it is against the law. The owners are saying that if they do not allow people to smoke in their bars, then customers will go elsewhere. I disagree with Verb 1. disagree with - not be very easily digestible; "Spicy food disagrees with some people" hurt - give trouble or pain to; "This exercise will hurt your back" that. If you choose to smoke, that is your business, but that does not mean that you can break the law because you disagree with it. Would it be such a hard thing for you to step outside for those few minutes and smoke? I remember when the smoking ban in restaurants went into effect and how owners said that they would lose business. People are still going out to eat, and they go outside to smoke. Why can't they do the same at bars? - Audrey Moore Palmdale This gaggle we call a City Council is, again, way out of line. Now they are sending firemen into bars to cite smokers? Furthermore, additional resources should be allocated to the enforcement efforts during the next budget cycle. We urge the city to use the tobacco settlement money from the federal lawsuit - money obtained from the tobacco deaths - to arrive at the tobacco solution. Enforcement of the smokefree workplace law is an essential component of the tobacco solution. - Charlie Smith Chairman of the Public Issues Committee - Marc S. Fremed Advocacy manager From my perspective, the ban on smoking in bars and restaurants is hurting businesses and the state more than helping them. I say this because I am one of those smokers you are trying to stop. I am not a drinker, but before this ban came out, I enjoyed going out to eat probably five times a week. Now, with the ban in effect, I go about twice a week, and only to restaurants that have patios where I can have a meal and enjoy my cigarette afterwards. I do miss some of the locations that I used to go to, but if they won't support me, I will not support them. As for the state being hurt, my New Year's resolution A New Year's Resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. The name comes from the fact that these commitments normally go into effect on New Year's Day and remain until the set for 1999 was not to buy cigarettes in the state of California again. I have kept that promise and haven't bought a single pack here. I and about 20 of my friends make runs to Nevada to buy our cigarettes. I guess I should be happy about the high taxes the state has added to cigarettes, because in Nevada they are almost half the price that they are in California. For you nonsmokers who say, ``Why don't you leave California and move to Nevada,'' that was my second resolution. I can't wait to get out of this state. - Lois Rodgers Sunland Councilwoman Laura Chick is right when she wants the enforcement program, however the fire inspectors are more or less using an education program to stop the smoking in bars. Why not use a program using both methods? Slapping a fine of only $81 is sufficient, however, there should also be an education program involved. If a smoker does not want to pay the fine, let him or her attend a chemotherapy session at any hospital. Hopefully when they see what a person has to go through when they are treated for cancer, they will think twice about picking up another cigarette. Those people who give chemotherapy treatments for cancer and the ``Gift of Life'' will be more than willing to help with this type program.
